And Leonard wasn't past his prime? Prime on prime Leonad beats him all day, everyday.......Hagler could not even box Vito off of him. He stunk. He was slow, plodding, and no foot work or head movement southpaw.......to say he could box is offensive to guys who really could.......

I answered Hagler. He was a great southpaw and a great switcher. He could go from lefty to righty easily and be very effective at righty. Not as great as southpaw but he was effective.

Yeh so great was Hagler's boxing ability at righty that Leonard beat him easily the first 4 rounds of the their fight, when Hagler tried to box orthodox. Hagler then spent the next 8 rounds following SRL around like an amateur because nobody had ever taught him how to step to the right or left, and cut the ring off....instead Hagler just plodded behind Ray, following him like a dumb puppy dog.

    Get real....

give the guy a break. we were all new to this sport once.

sweet pea has my vote. but i think if byrd woulda stayed lower than heavyweight he woulda been alot better suited. correct me if im wrong but i think he started at around 175.

also cory spinks is pretty slick but i dont think hes quite an atg southpaw.

What's with these Hagler by far comments? What makes him easily better/greater than Whitaker?

His advantages are that he's more powerful, and also more versatile. He fought from both stances, and showed a great ability to switch styles to perfection when he fought in the manner he did against Hearns. Whitaker was no one-dimensional fighter himself, however. He could box from the outside behind his great southpaw jab (up there with Hagler's jab), move laterally, or on the backfoot. He could stand and trade in the pocket. He was an excellent body puncher with a good workrate.

Are those advantages enough to make Hagler far better than Whitaker? Resume? Whitaker's is pretty damn good: Ramirez, Mayweather, McGirt twice, Chavez, Nelson, Vasquez, among others. Defense? Hagler was a solid defensive fighter, Whitaker was one of the all-time greats.

If Hagler's greater than Whitaker, it isn't by much.
