He said the exact same thing about the Norton staredown. I think George likes to overdo it with his nice, gentle guy act. No, I dont think he was scared of Frazier and Norton.
Well, I do. Frazier was never at his best after FOTC, but Foreman had very little experience going in with Frazier. Frazier was actually a 3-1 favorite.
Sometimes I think 90s Foreman wants us to think he was an absolute wimp back then! What a joke, he's one of the most intimidating boxers of all time.
Well, he was trying to build a reputation as a changed man and spread the word of God. Although, and Im certainly not one to give advice to some influential figure/world champion, he might have better off admitting he wanted to cause harm to Frazier, Norton and co. and that he had since made amends
Its been a very long time, but when Foreman fought his exhibition with the Toronto 5 way back when, he did the staredown shtick with Alonzo Johnson and I think Alonzo planted a big wet one on him for getting too close.
The Hearns-Benitez one is iconic and the first one that springs to mind. Foreman-Frazier as well, the two of them trading glares while Joe looks up at George is one of the classic boxing photos. Duran-Barkley had a pretty good one to.
Well he publicly admitted that when he was younger he really wanted to kill one of his opponents to establish a permanent aura of fear so that he could win half the battle before it began. He admitted he hated Ali during Zaire and did not hold back any of his punches to punish him. He doesn't hesitate to talk about his less than noble past mugging people even when he spoke to students at Oxford. His problem is that he's a bit of a politician whose flexible with the narrative and facts to appeal to a certain audience or for clout. For example, whenever people ask how he'd do with champions from other eras he rarely says he'd win and overly praises them. I guess he feels like it would be a bad look for a 70 year old man to boast about beating someone even though he made a living beating people up. The being intimidated by Norton and Frazier stuff despite him glaring them down on camera and showing them no respect could be more politician/revisionist history to sound more humble and relatable.
I would hate to see what he would of done if he was so intimidated. . . On the other he says that he was worried that he might hurt Ali.
It could have been the idea that he was fighting for the Championship. I don't think he feared Frazier but Joe was a badA$$ no doubt. I'm sure he had respect for Frazier.
