Uppercuts HW- Tyson LHW- RJJ MW- Kalambay ? WW-Kid Gavilan LW- Ike Williams FW- Arguello and Pedroza BW- Jofre and Zarate FlyW- Ricardo Lopez
Schmeling deserves praise for his uppercut, which immediately preceded the right right hand blast that ko'ed Louis in fight number 1.
I hear that cobra. This is largely due to his very average handspeed, as well as looking average in every other area. His style is very deceiving. I had a change in heart about the HW divison's best right hand punch. What about Ingo? Shut guys out that got taken the distance by Liston, and carried some devastating power, even if it was slow. It's a shame that that was his only punch worth mentioning.
Noteworthy as one of the very few world class fighters who could uppercut effectively with both hands. Vic's mention of Ambers is also apt. Lou might have the best left uppercut of any champion out of the orthodox stance. Watching him rake Canzi on the ropes with it has lingered in my mind ever since. Not a hookercut, but a pure left uppercut. Arguello was also good with this specialty weapon. At LHW, I rate Loughran's jab over those of Bob Foster and Mike Spinks. He schooled taller and longer armed men like Campolo, Impellitiere 3X, Braddock, Max Baer, Martin Burke and others. He fenced his way to wins over around ten different fellow champions of all different shapes, sizes and styles.
Lt. Heavyweight is stacked out the ass with top jabbers. Anyways, noone willing to give Napoles a shout for uppercuts? I thought his was superior to Gavilan's. Just as stylish when he threw it bolo style, but the key point is that it was more damaging a punch, and he could shorten it up very well when needed also. He could counter with it, throw them in combination with either hand, and as his rematch with Ernie Lopez shows, he could starch you with it.
Oh, and Orlando Canizales should be an honorable mention for uppercuts at Bantam. Not as powerful as the other mentions, but he used it immaculately. The way he snuck it in with such fluidity and textbook perfection when fighting in the pocket. Beautiful punch. Watch his barrage of left and right uppercuts that finish off Louis Curtis (who'd just gone the rounds with his brother and given him a real go of things) in the second round. Probably my favorite performance of his overall. A technical clinic on feinting, angling/hiding and combination punching. All done seamlessly.
Exactly...too damned decieving to be properly appreciated..****..his record speaks for itself..case closed. As far as Ingo is concerned, rather than make him into something that he wasn't..he wasn't an overall gifted or "complete" fighter, yet, what he was was a purist, who had, especially in '58 and '59, a very sophisticated delivery system for that guided missle of a right...that mystique about "it has a mind of it's own".."toonder and lightning".."Thor's hammer"...lulling opponents asleep with that monotonous jab and retreating until "BOOM"...and he got milage out of all of that until the rematch with Floyd (the good Floyd, lol)..and I appreciate him for that purist aspect of his heyday when he was able to so effectively market that secret weapon of his. I think he got complacent, fat and lazy...and of course his chin was no good.
Ah I am glad I am still in touch.. Hagler for MW jab, Tyson for HW uppercut, Arguello for LW right hand are all being mentioned by others too.
