I don't want to go down the old road of saying Patterson s Chin v big Puncher's equal s disaster. But I do think cooney being a fast starter ,he could have Floyd in trouble fast. But could Floyd maybe survive an initial barrage from him and maybe take him in to the late rounds ,where cooney struggles.? And if spinks could do it are we sure Floyd can't ? Im undecided on this .
SUPERCOONEY blast out not only Patterson in 1, but Dempsey Louis Langford Marciano Liston Any Holmes but June 82 Holmes Tyson Foreman Frazier Ali Clay Cobb Klitschkckschko 1 & 3, and Jeffries ALL IN 1. Gerry Cooney was the most ballettically balanced, smooth as silk mover in heavyweight history. Moreover, he hit harder with his left hook than a Frank Howard baseball bat to the noggin. His right hand is soooooo underrated, it actually was harder than Dempsey's rt nicknamed Iron Mike, than the Brown Bomber s than the Brockton Blockbuster s. And tough!. Why Cooney had a chin and body of granite. Impervious to pain. Knows NO fear. A living firebreathing real life Beowulf raring and ready to slay the Grendal's Mothers of heavyweight history. The true JUGGERNAUT of the division I give you Gerry Calamity Cooney!
If we're talking the Cooney who fought Young, Lyle, and Norton then definitely Cooney. If its the one who was drunk in training camp against Spinks then Patterson.
Wow Morlocks, let just send him in against Godzilla for pete sakes! For the record he 'feasted' on over the hill fighters before Holmes. He fought a pretty good fight against Holmes but, as anyone could see at that time, he was in against THE first top notch 'primer' in his career and it showed. As I said, he fought a pretty darn good fight against Holmes, nothing to be ashamed about. So, given his performance, there were plenty of top Heavies he should have matched with shortly thereafter but...what did your 'wrecking machine monster' do?...took two frigging years off???!!! After that?...merely a 'should have beener' who never realized his potential just like many other wannabes throughout boxing history. Lastly, my late friend and I bet $500 each on Holmes in their fight. After the third round KD we said: "What an easy way to pay all our bills for the next month"! Quote: "Never has so little been done with so much". My $0.02
Young Patterson had some footspeed...older Patterson was more stationary. Patterson 6'-0", 71" reach. Cooney 6'-6", 81" reach Whose big-time left hook gets there first will determine the fight.
