If facing a power puncher of the same height, which way to counter wild hooks is better (less risk), be safe and step out of range then punch or roll under the hook and punch?

you never want to keep repeating one move over and over against a guy. most will ctach on and then set you up. block the hook and counter, weave and counter, weave and push his shoulder to knock him off balance, step in then feint and step out..... etc.... keep him not knowing what your gonna do next.

If they are wild and wide but do not trouble you in the power department, you could get inside the hooks and counter with more compact punches. If there is too much power on his punches to be inside, the better option would be to box on the outside and pick your shots. Wild people telegraph a lot so that should be relatively easy.

If it's wild and you can see it coming, throw your own hook inside of it while blocking. Never hook with a hooker...but if he's throwing wild then YOU'RE the hooker in this situation ;) So it's him that shouldn't be hooking with you.

Also, it often works to counter with a hook regardless of whether you see it coming or not. If you feel one land on your glove, elbow, ribs, or face, it's probably worth it to throw one back. I dropped a guy recently when he hooked me in the face and then tried to slip away to my left. I threw a hook as soon as I felt the impact and it clipped his chin and put him down.

Best counter for a hook is usually a hook. If you duck or weave under the hook, come up and over with a right hand. If he's particularly wild, you might need to take a big step toward him while throwing.

straight punches usually beat a hook to the mark and can be thrown with less risk at a greater range.

Counter to the body on the side the hook came from...you've got to anticipate the hook and have quick feet but that's how I like to do it.

The best counter for a hook, is a hook. Provided yours is delivered correctly. Watch someone inexperienced hook on the pads. I pretty much gurantee they will drop their back hand. Its natural to do that. By blocking the hook with the 'salut' you can prime a hook counter that can come over the low rear hand.

if you have the range, straight punches no doubt.

I, on the other hand, normally counter to the body because I am so short I have to reach up to tie my own shoes.

My favorite part is when someone tries to counter with a straight and they actually open themselves up even more for the hook. Furthermore, if I'm throwing a hook at you, I'm probably too close to hit with a straight punch.

The safest counter is a hook, unless you have a huge reach advantage. End of.

He's right though, most people pull the right back a little when they hook, making a hook a good counter. That those two guys both did it isn't really relevant. The lesson is stay "on the phone" when punching.

Double knockdowns happen precisely because the hook is such a good counter. And because guys forget not to hook with a hooker. You've just got to make sure YOU'RE the hooker.
