Ive been boxing for about 6 months now, got my first amateur fight coming up on the 17th July. I am around 5 ' 9 and weight 12 stone 4 last night whilst sparring i thought a guy who was around 6 ' 1. his reach was much longer then mine and to put it straight i took a bit of a beating. I found it extremely hard work to get inside land a few shots and get out without being caught. i have been told to expect most of my fights to be against guys around the 6 foot mark So any advice on the best way to land shots without being pummeled everytime you step in would be useful. Thanks
you have to feint alot to make opening, obviously when you feint the bigger guy will try and land a shot and make most of the opportunity. its hard to do it well though just practice practice practice.
My father was a short heavyweight and fought tons of guys bigger than him. I remember him telling me that he hit some guys in the diaphragm to make them lose thier breath and then he would beat them senseless.
yeah the old saying is kill the body and head will die, obviously taking the wind out of someone bigger will make them much slower and easier to hit and easier to avoid their shots.
I used to spar some 6 foot 6 guy, im 6 1 and he was similar weight to me. Now I often spar a few guys taller than me still. Feinting a jab to the head then throwing a long cross to the body worked well, then back up to the head again and move, another one is jab to the body, jab, cross/overarm to the head. Time him well, creep forward, slip to the outside as you come in and throwing jabs inside his guard and to the body, being very quick moving away and some more head movement. All about good movement and timing really. All these things used to work well, I'm not such a come forward pressure fighter, I like to box more but sometimes just piling the pressure on and fighting inside is your best but takes a lot of energy. You don't have to be like Tyson to win against taller guys, Mayweather against corrales is a good example.
Jab your way in, double up on it to land the second (they will usually lean back on the first). Cut off the ring to avoid useless chasing around. Move your head. Work the body as well once inside. Be very aggressive, don't let him establish his jab because once he does you're in trouble.
Watch joe frazier, he is constantly bobbing and ducking, making taller fighters come down and leaving themselves open. When they do, come up top
I will be about 160 pounds come fight night. I have the power, its just being able to use it effectively without getting tagged. But I am goin to work on new things in sparring
work on getting under the jab and move your head alot. thats something you should constantly practice in shadow boxing. when your on the inside go to the body. dont even bother with the head until you have made a lot of contact with the body because if you are fighting a good boxer who is taller than you you will have a hard time with it.
keep a tight defense also,, dont walk into him hands low or u will get picked off,, blocking his punches will lower his stamina and give you counter punch oppurtunities to the body. in the 1st round put emphasis onto landing the 1st clean punch, u say u hav the power so a clean punch from you can really give you the phsycological edge in a fight, the more you frustrate him the more he will either detatch from his outfighting style and go all guns blazing or either accept defeat and try not just to get knockd out,, the scenarios above both create an oppurtunity for you to finish him!
