I have had shin splints since the start of the new season and it has got to the stage where i cant run through it any more.

What is the best way to heal them?

If it is shin splints, then its rest from the things that irritate it.
You can continue most things boxing, bags, pads etc, but skipping and running are out for a while.

I used to get it quite a bit in pre-season on the hard ground, and my physio put me through a lot of calf-soleus-ankle-foot strengthening work during my rehab, and a lot of punishing aerobic sessions in water.

But to heal them, the answer is to actually give them the chance to heal, and thats to stop the things irritating the condition.

    Ice massage down the shin.

Shin splints is usully a symtom for a combination of:
a)Starting a high load of running too quickly
b)The rolling of the foot (inwards or outwards)
c)Running on hard and uneaven surfaces

I plan on four weeks complete rest and I will make sure that I put ice on them every day.
Some people also mention applying heat therapy? Any idea what that is?

When you go back to running after your rest, run on the balls of your feet, like your sprinting. A lot of Thai boxers do it, as some of them put up a ridiculous number of k's in a week, and it is said to help prevent shin splints. It's also a fantastic calf workout.

I had shin splits since the summer. I've only just got back into the gym since then, I wanted to rest if for a few weeks, got lazy, ended up resting them for a few months lol but whatever. But I still get the pain? Maybe I should go to the doctor, as I had a problem with my feet/ankles a while back, I tore the ligaments from just exercising (ie no sprained ankle or anything), maybe it's the way I walk?

Shin splints more people complain of isnt really shin splints, its inflammation caused by overuse, or sudden increase in training or training type.
Sounds like you may have something more chronic, possibly even muscle tears.
