My vote goes to Rigo over Donaire but let's see. By the way, this is not about the most exciting fights but about those which actually looked good on the resume. Some honorable mentions: - Sturm TKO2 Barker - Thompson TKO5 Price - Golovkin KO3 Macklin - Mikey Garcia KO4 Lopez - Mikey Garcia TD8 Salido - Gonzales KO1 Marez - Porter UD12 Alexander
The win over Donaire for sure. Thompson's 2 wins over Price should not go unnoticed. I remember a writer on Boxrec predicting Price would end the year undefeated even if he faced a Klitschko.atsch
Rigo vs donaire is the obvious choice as you say. Stevenson vs Dawson and Garcia vs matthysse are also great wins.
Rigo completely undressed one of the best fighters in the world - for me, it's clearly the most impressive win of the year.
Off that list, I would say 1) Rigondeaux UD12 Donaire (a display of unbridled mastery, plain and simple - and gut-check for the Flash after years of being on top but having it relatively easy...) 2) Mayweather MD12 Alvarez (this was someone he was supposedly ducking, and the scoring didn't reflect how dominant he was; this was as close to a MD as Rigondeaux vs. Donaire...) 3) Maidana UD12 Broner (underdog bursting the bubble and humbling the braggart, replete with multiple knockdowns...probably the most satisfying win of 2013...) Honorable mention: Juan Francisco Estrada SD12 Brian Viloria (coming from nowhere, having lost in his only two prior steps up in class although he gave a good account of himself versus Choc, and beating a longtime p4p fixture) Bernard Hopkins UD12 Tavoris Cloud (more impressive than Stevenson retiring Cloud on his stool after seven if only because Hopkins is pushing fifty and has no business at his age dethroning prime world titlists...even limited ones...)
Very few saw it last night (I only came in partway into the 2nd round myself, too late to start a RBR) but on WBCBoxing.TV and Cadena network in Mexico there was a pretty big upset with freewheeling Mexican journeyman brawler Pablo "Sepulterero" Munguia absolutely bossing Colombian-Canadian prospect Samuel Vargas and dealing his first loss via UD10. Vargas looked shell-shocked and on the verge of being put to sleep all night and probably didn't win a single round as the Mexico City audience got a real treat with their local boy unexpectedly opening a can of whoop-ass on the former WBC #39 light middleweight and WBO #15 welterweight. Munguia fearlessly soared through desperate counter-punches and kept Vargas backpedaling from bell to bell. That is probably up there, if criteria includes defying expectations.
1) Guillermo Rigondeaux UD12 Nonito Donaire 2) Simpiwe Vetyeka RTD6 Chris John 3) Marcos Maidana UD12 Adrien Broner
Maidana was the most satisfying win to watch Stevenson's KO of Dawson was the most shocking....I knew it could happen but didn't expect it to take it just 1 minute! But overall the best win has to be Rigo's schooling of Donaire
Danny Garcia over Lucas Matt is def worth a mention Just I voted Rigo over Donaire, I picked Rigo to win even after 20 odd journalists on ring magazine picked Doniare and not one picked Rigo Was a masterful display for the purists
