So I stopped going to the gym for financial reasons and wont be able to start again till next year in spring. My question is what's the best training workout I can do at home so I can keep getting better or at least keep fresh. I can only spar and do mitts once a week. My guess was shadowboxing but I also have a double end bag and a heavy bag. So which out of the three should I work on the most? All tips appreciated. Thank you for reading
Warm up and cool down with shadowboxing. Do rounds on the double and heavy. If you want to get in crazy shape, do 10 burpees between every round. 6 rounds, 50 burpees. You'll be a monster.
When you hit the heavy bag, don't just stand there and throw punches. Box the bag. Control the movement with your feet and your jab. Visualize punches coming at you; avoid them, slide in and punch then finish your combinations by moving. Either change your angle and keep punching, or get out of range. Always anticipate somebody punching back at you. You can train your mind to anticipate and to react- condition yourself to think boxing, if that makes sense. Also, moving around the bag and dealing with it up close is good practice for working with a body. You are 'shadow-boxing' with impact.
Heavy bag is the best option considering your post. Great workout for conditioning. Split into rounds replicating the demands of a real boxing fight. during your intervals perform with high intensity punching, 20 second sprints/body rips/hard fast combos etc. my trainer used to say 'theory makes you dreary' when he saw guys slowing down too often. he appreciated working on pure technique but he would emphasize the importance of a high intensity session if you want to be physically prepared
I'm always in and out of training, but one thing I never stop doing is shadowboxing. Every time I go back to a gym I seem to have improved quite a bit. Also used a double-end bag and heavy bag. My advice is all three with an emphasis on shadowboxing. Heavy bag if you want to focus on conditioning.
