I personally think it is because Ward loves to fight on the inside (where he is brilliant) and bully his opponent around. Beterbiev is far too strong for that imo.

I know it's a controversial issue and many people disagree, however, some quotes from people who explain my POV on this stylistic matchup:

I've always said that Beterbiev is the worst matchup for Ward possible, worse as Kovalev even.
Beterbiev walks him down, cuts him off, and is relentless doing that. Ward can't use his clinch/hold and hit method either because we've seen how he mauls out of that against other opponents and effectively ending the fight doing that.

I can see Beterbiev having to come from behind, but I'm pretty sure he stops Ward

Robney is spot on in his assessment. Beterbiev is a natural Cruiserweight, he could viciously maul Ward if he wanted to, it was all Ward could do to keep Bika under control, and Artur is far more physically imposing than Sakio, strength for strength Beterbiev has a huge edge.
