You're apparently not alone here, but for the life of me, I don't understand this sort of thinking. :smoke
Those people would do it out of spite rather than out of objective reasoning, we know how good Beterbiev is already and he's proven it against several fighters who are pretty good by absolutely demolishing them, I've no doubt even if he lost to Kovalev he'd prove in retrospect later on how great a victory it was for Kovalev (that's just making the assumption that Kova wins of course).
I agree with you actually, in spite of my taunting of Beterbiev fan (which I'm one of:nut), I'm happy it isn't happening, I want Beterbiev to get a lot more good wins under his belt so the fight will be even more significant, at this point no one would care that much except for the hardcore fans.
I don't. If HBO and the powers that be could have worked this one out and provided the appropriate incentive for both parties, I'd have been thrilled. People are excited about GGG-Lemieux, which to me is an obvious mismatch. Lemieux, despite having legit power, is being overrated of late (like Stevens before him), and in terms of the championship caliber, he's mediocre at best on that front. But Kovalev-Beterbiev is one that fans really should get excited about - right now, IMHO. While I think Kovalev would win, and is the more complete package, whose jab would be the difference maker, this isn't a mismatch in the same sense that GGG-Lemieux is. Meaning Beterviev would have a far better chance of landing the upset against Kovalev than Lemieux would against GGG - and the former would involve 2 higher level fighters, while the other only involves 1. Beterbiev is already ready enough that this is an exceptionally compelling match-up. :smoke
Beterbiev is a smart guy. Kovalev knows that sooner or later he will have to fight beterbiev, that's unavoidable, and he wanted it to be sooner and not later. Why? because he knows that beterbiev's a guy that can really beat the hell out of him, and that right now is not experienced and would be MUCH easier to beat him now. It would have been a terrible mistake from beterbiev to fight kovalev now. Kovalev would have won because of his lack of experience and would never give him a rematch. I want to watch kovalev vs beterbiev, but not now, I want beterbiev to have at least 15 fights in his record, at least.
I'd have been thrilled as well but for historical purposes its good the fight is stewing a little more to let it gain in significance, and yeah AB has more of a chance at the upset here rather than David, but I don't think many fans outside of this and other forums would care that much.
atschatsch This isn't 50's America with segregated society. Russia is a very tolerant country with historically many ethnicities and cultures living under the roof. Why would they boo one of their own who made the Olympics team, liked by Russian sports media and boxing fans and was a good amateur athlete?
Stevenson could've fought Kovalev back in 2014. Remember that's why they both fought on the same card Nov 2013. Stevenson chose to run away and sign with Haymon. Kovalev fought the guys that Stevenson was supposed to fight lol Stevenson could've fought Kovalev on HBO PPV and accepted the 50/50 Beterbiev could've accepted the offer and fought Kovalev in Russia. Yvon Michel says that Beterbiev needs 1 more fight, like that is going to get him more ready for Kovalev lol. Keep crying
This fight will be better in a few more fights. Artur could use more experience. I'm not saying Artur will turn into this "slick" boxer with more fights, but he could improve. Sergey Kovalev has been improving, why can't Arur be allowed to improve his professional game? He hasn't experienced things as a pro and he better hope he doesn't experience it during a fight with the most dangerous man in boxing, Sergey Kovalev. IMO it also makes sense to build the fight a little more. Artur will only get bigger in Canada, maybe the States. Kovalev will get bigger in the States. Not saying this will be Mayweather vs. Pacquiao type of hype, but it could use more of a build up.
If Beterbiev fights that IBF eliminator, then he won't have "a few more fights", he will have 1 more fight before Kovalev. How is BHop or Skoglund or Chilemba going to get Beterbiev ready for Kovalev?
