The pronunciation of Beterbiev is quite the rabbit's hole. I've watched this all play out in real time over time and I've witnessed exactly what happened on this one. Suffice to say, Rumsfeld pronounced it correctly. I hate to break it to you but it's not prounounced "Better" "Beav" and that actually sounds nerdy. And yes, it gets often pronounced this way and those that say it this way are under the impression that they're saying it correctly. You'll probably tell me that Beterbiev himself confirmed that's how it's said. There's people all over the internet who swear on their life that they've researched it and have concluded that years ago when everyone was saying it "But" "ur" "be" "ev" that they were prouncing it all wrong and that they asked his team and Beterbiev himself and that it's really supposed to be prounced in the dorky nerdy "Better" "Beav". Here's what happened. There's the Americanized English pronunciation of his name that's "Better" "Beav" which is said to be the correct way to say it. They'er wrong. That's like pronouncing certain Spanish words in English that are prounounced differently. The traditional and correct way to prounce his name is the 4 syllables "But" "ur" "be" "ev" exactly how Rummy prounced it in his video. The 3 syllable version that much of the internet has been brainwashed to believe is correct "Better" "Beav" sounds dorky and nerdy and isn't the native way to prounce his name . . . period. And I don't care if you show me some supposed evidence about this, the etymology of how to pronounce his name in his native language is very clear, and I'll get into it further if you don't believe me.
You're a nerd then lol. The more you say it outloud, the nerdier and dorkier you'll sound. No matter how many people tell you you're right or that's how you pronounce it. What's your doing is similar to pronouncing a spanish word that's spelt the same as in english but pronounced differently in spanish and you're pronouncing it in the wrong dialect.
Put this into google translate бетэрбиев and select Russian, Bulgarian, Spanish, Arabic, Estonian, etc. Then click to have it said outloud. You'll get the native 4 syllables version. Then translate it to English, that's when you'll get the 3 syllables "Better" "Beav" said outloud in English. Literally all people did was research it through an English spelling and they concluded that's how you say it. Names are supposed to be pronounced based on how they are spelled in their native language even when spelled in English. For example, take the word Terrible, as in Erik "Terrible" Morales. When you pronounce his full name including nickname Erik "Terrible" Morales, you don't say the English pronunciation "Terr" "a" "bull" do you, of course not, you say "Terrible" as it's pronounced in Español "Terr" "e" "ble". I'm glad we've had this crash course in linguistics and how to correctly pronounce Beterbiev's name. This is something that's been bothering me for some time so thank you dren for bringing this up.
I pronounced it the other way for years, in large part because that's the only way I'd ever heard it pronounced on TV. Some fans were critical, and after looking into it more, I switched up the way I was pronouncing it, and now different people are saying I'm mispronouncing it. I'm notoriously bad at pronunciating names, but I always strive to do my best to get them correct. I don't always win that battle, however.
Бетербиев = Byetyerbeeyev with the y sound soft. No need to go full Buffer and master it. Thanks for acknowledging in the video that no one will agree with the Kovalev-Ward opinion and saving us all a heated post.
