No doubt Beterbiev has been impressive so far but seeing how badly he was hurt against Johnson tells me that he is beatable especially by a dangerous counter puncher that is very solid defensively like Tarver was. I'm probably going g to be in the minority here but I need to see more of Beterbiev against high level competition before I take him over a guy like Tarver. Tarver is without question a better fighter than anyone Beterbiev has faced so far.
Please tell us how badly hurt he was against Johnson. Then I'll watch the fight again to see if your assessment is correct.
He gets caught on the inside by a short left hook and dropped. He gets up a little wobbly but after taking the 8 count and clearing his head he is fine. Go watch it on YouTube. I think Beterbiev is a phenomenal offensive fighter but again, the jury is still out if he is on the Tarver level to me. Tarver was such a sharp counter puncher, I could see him having success against Beterbiev. I simply need to see more of Beterbiev against higher level competition. He certainly looks like he has the goods.
The way I see it is this, if a Middleweight moving up up LHW like Bernard Hopkins could catch and stun a natural LHW like Tarver, then someone with the natural pedigree and size of someone like Beterbiev could most definately overpower Tarver. People are disapointed with Beterbiev expecting a slickster to get on his toes and show more layers but what he does is suffecient enough to take away the gameplan of someone with more natural ring IQ and aptitude. Look at his amateur record (Kovalev, Dorticos, Hunter, Usyk) and it tells you everything about him; beyond good enough.
Bernard Hopkins was not just some middleweight. Look at his LH resume. It is pretty damn impressive. I agree Beterbiev looks very good but I am not ready to say he beats Tarver just yet. He has unbelievable power and a very good amauter pedigree but so does Tarver
I think Tarver at his best would outperform Gvoz and win. Beterbiev is hittable and not totally proven yet.
I remember seeing Tarver get put on his arse by the likes of former MW Reggie Johnson & getting his jaw broken by men like Eric Harding who have a 25% KO ratio Tarvers a bit overrated imo.. he beat Roy when he was ripe for the taking after he'd juiced up to HW & had to get back down to 175 within months Beterbiev would take his head off, it's only cos he's been sorely mismanaged & put on the shelf that he doesn't have men like Stevenson & Kovalev etc on his resume .. cos he'd have sparked both.. one of the most naturally heavy handed LHWs I've ever seen.. & a clever fighter too.
You are correct, Tarver had his jaw broken by Harding but he finished that fight on his feet and actually finished his entire career having never been knocked out or stopped. He was one of the top US amateur's in a very tought era and only lost to the very elite. The jury is still out on Beterbiev. He has so far looked great against some good but not great fighters. The win against nail was a damn impressive one but Tarver had a hell of a lot more to his game than Nail.
Tarvers resume is built on ageing fighters.. RJJ 35, Griffin 33, Johnson 36, Hopkins 41 (admittedly Hopkins was a freak) Woods 36, R. Johnson 36.. I know age isn't everything but #1 he lost to a lot of them or barely got by them & #2 they mostly were OLD, in boxing years not in age years.. there's a difference.. & he got BEATDOWN by Hopkins & looked like **** against bummy Muriqi too.. Every time he'd win a title he'd lose it within a first defense or two lol.. & consider by 15 fights or so AB was unified champion whilst Tarver was losing to men like Harding .. they aren't really the same level of athlete or champion imo.. I could be wrong, if I am so be it.. but Tarver was doped to high heaven too & he was still incredibly inconsistent.. I saw nothing from him throughout his career to suggest that a LHW monster like Beterbiev couldn't pummel him. So sorry pal but Tarver was backed up by the physical & aggressive Glen Johnson & looked awful boxing on the back foot at times.. imagine what Beterbiev would do.. Too many Rose tinted glasses in boxing. You only have to look at some of Tarvers fight to see how sluggish & low output he could be. It's the Jones association & the fact that jones was so revered that makes Tarver seem more than he actually was. I think Jones losing to Tarver demonstrated Roy's declining prowess more than it showed anything about Tarver. Look what Roy went onto do.. I think AB beats Bivol & ultimately unifies 175 within 12 months or so too.
Every fighter you named that Tarver fought was the same age or Traver was actually older than. Again, I like Beterbiev but outside of his win over Nail, he hasn't done enough on the pro level yet for me to pick him over Tarver. He is still early on in his pro career. I wouldn't count Bivol out if that fight comes off. He is a very smart fighter.
