Sweet Scientist inspired me to pose this question to the classic section.I'll make it very simple. Who do you all think was a better fighter at 154 lbs, Oscar Delahoya or JC Vasquez?I have include a poll. Let me rephrase the question.....was the JC Vasquez who fought PErnell Whitaker better than the DLH who fought Mayweather?Let the Poll question reflect that.
Given the attention span of half the guys here they probably won't even read your post and just answer to the thread title but oh well. I'll be interested to see if someone gives a detailed breakdown of this one. I think the Vasquez of the Pea fight would knock DLH of the Mayweather fight out btw, and that's notwitstanding me thinking DLH edged FLoyd. THat's right I just don't rate Mayweather as an 154 pounder at all.
Against Sweet Pea, we can consider that Vasquez was in his prime. Against PBF, DLH was past it. I had PBF/DLH 115-113 BTW. Is prime Vasquez better than the 2007 version of De La Hoya? Yes he is.
de la hoya. vasquez had a longer stay at 154, but his resume is littered with nobodies. de la hoya didnt do too much either, but his stay was also way shorter. and de la hoya was certainly more talented. wins over vargas, mayorga and castillejo arent that bad either. and lets not forget that vasquez went life and death with castillejo, while oscar totally outclassed him and shut him out.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you haven't actually seen Vasquez-Castillejo. Prove to me you know more about the fight than what boxrec tells you. Describe the fight.
What is it in JC Vasquez' resume thats so impresses you Scientist? I wont pretend to be an expert on Vasquez, but I did catch a few of his un-notable fights other than the Whitaker fight on spanish network TV. Vasquez never striked me to be anything other than a limited tough fighter with decent skills. A Carlos Baldomir, Javier Castillejo type. Tough, some skills, but slow as mollases. I never saw Vasquez' fight with an up and coming Winky Wright, did you Scientist? I'd would venture to guess that it was a Winky Wright who had not even begun to tighten his turtle shell defense! In any regards. Its hard for me to envision a limited skilled plodder like Vasquez beating even tommorows version of DLH, much less the version who in your opinion beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. Maybe you can enlighten us on JC Vasquez, Scientist?
He knows vaszques is very mediocre, but he realizes that its one of whitakers best wins so he'll make him out to be alot better than what he actually was.
Vlade, you mentioned Julio Cesar Vasquez along with Carlos Baldomir and Javier Castillejo. Let me distinguish him from both. Vasquez was a much better boxer than Carlos Baldomir. He was definitely quicker than Carlos and had a better skillset. You could see that just from looking at the Whitaker fight. And in fact one of the first things the commentators noticed in the fight was how underrated Vasquez's boxing ability was. Despite some thinking that was a Whitaker whitewash, to me it was a 7-5 type of decision (of course it was somewhat more lopsided because of the the two point deductions). Would Carlos Baldomir so much as win a round from that Whitaker? I don't think so. Whitaker wasn't at his best, but Whitaker would have dominated that Baldomir I have no doubt. Slow predictable punches, without much of an inside game. Vasquez by contrast was probably the first fighter Whitaker fought who actually beat him up to the body (broke Whitaker's rib according to a report I've read). His infighting was much superior to Baldomir's and he knew how to grapple and use his strength to rough a fighter up, get a fighter near the ropes and keep them there. Much more effective than Baldomir has been in that respect through the fights I've seen of his (Judah, Mayweather, Gatti). As for Javier Castillejo, from what I've heard from a mate (admittedly an Argentinian) who has seen the fight, he felt that Vasquez clearly beat him up and that there were about 3 or 4 rounds that could have gone Castillejo's way. Given that Castillejo lost a unanimous decision in his home country (one by a scorecard of 120-111), is there any more conclusive evidence for him being clearly beaten? I can't say much more than that not having seen their fight (other than a highlight of a couple of rounds from which I can't draw much from). And I'll just add, even if it wasn't as dominant as DLH's beating of Castillejo, that was a PRIME Castillejo. The one Oscar fought wasn't. As for the Winky Wright fight, Wright had better speed there and combination throwing ability than what he has shown in the last 3 or 4 years, but he didn't have the tight turtle shell defense at that point and Vasquez took advantage of that, dropping him 5 times on the way to a clear, dominating victory. A green, underdeveloped Winky no doubt, but a good win all the same considering that that Winky was still decent. Winky showed champion heart to survive that contest and not get ko'ed. What else does Vasquez have on his resume? Well, some good wins against: - a slightly faded Tyrone Trice - Aaron Davis who was a pretty good fighter - Carl Daniels (good come from behind stoppage with a devastating KO) - a blowout of Hitoshi Kamiyama (available on youtube to see) BTW, his loss to Verno Phillips was a DQ loss because his trainer entered the ring disputing that Phillips didn't hit Vasquez after the bell.
I don't try to pump up Whitaker's opponents any more than they deserve to be. If I did, I'd be saying things like Buddy McGirt should be in the HOF, but hey that's what you believe, not me. :good
buddy mcgirt should be in the hall of fame, i can name alot of people in the hall of fame that hes better than. I just dont agree with people that think hes better than cotto and he would have a 50/50 shot at beating mosley.
