Admitadly I haven't seen enough of Vasquez, but I'd go for a 2007 Delahoya. Delahoya is far more varied, better boxerm jab, excellent power, better defensively and bigger at the weight (probably weighing at least 165lbs and being 5'11 helps). People say Delahoya in 2007 is faded BUT he was coming off a destructive win over Mayorga, which looked mighty impressive. Still had the same skills, technically improved, and BIG and strong at the weight. I had Mayweather beating Delahoya 9-3, but Delahoya pushed Mayweather in the first 8rounds, which other P4P guys like Judah and Hatton couldn't manage.
I forgot to mention Delahoya mixed in better comp than Vasquez at 154 and 160. Would Vasquez beat Vargas? Would he arguably beat Mosley? Would he go 9rounds with BHOP winning a few rounds? Would he blow Mayorga out in 6rounds?
DLH's advantages are that he has a better jab and combination throwing ability, as well as a tighter defense, but he is not the bigger man here at all. Height wise perhaps, but Vasquez is naturally much bigger bodied and is stronger by far. Vasquez also has better in fighting ability imo, and works the body better. He also has the better stamina, and can keep pitching and catching all day long. DLH, especially a 2007 one, can't. It would be impressive if Mayorga was an impressive fighter, but really, he isn't. DLH looked markedly slower than he had years before and didn't have the legs he had say in the second Mosley fight, to say nothing of an even earlier DLH. Judah is not a p4p guy, but he was arguably even with Floyd after 8 rounds. Hatton pushed Floyd for 7 rounds too. I think Vasquez-Vargas is a 50/50 fight. I'm not sure either guy would be able to take 12 rounds of the other guys' punishment and that's what makes it so exciting. Would he arguably beat Mosley? I think he would. The size advantage would be massive. Would he go 9 rounds with B-Hop and win a few? I think he goes 12 and wins a few. And I think he'd dispose of Mayorga without too much trouble. Oh and he wouldn't be mutilated by Felix Sturm.
1. Agreed, I think this makes Delahoya better overall, different fighters and as an aggressive pressure fighter vasquez is better 2. Theres different types of size, IE Hearns hige but skinny, and Hatton short but super stocky at the weight. Vasquez is stocky BIG but overall mass (height & stockyness combined) you would think Delahoya was bigger, weighing in around at 165 (he actually weighed 160 against Chavez in their second fight :admin ) 3. I think Mayorgas a little underrated now, and I must admit I have a soft spot for him. Yes he isnt elite or the best of the best, but on his day he can be fearsome. His first win over Forrest set the boxing world on fire. His performance against Vargas was a good win (and that Vargas came close against Mosley first time out and was at 168 not suiting Mayorga) 4. Judah was P4P top8 before he lost to Baldomir, which was an abiration and was at his best against Floyd. First time I watched that fight I gave Judah 5 rounds, second time I watched it I gave him 3 BUT he was winning early on Hatton despite coming forward never really won many rounds, maybe 2 rounds, he didnt land on Mayweather all night (I thought he rocked Mayweather in the 1st but on second viewing Mayweather slipped the punch and then lost his balance) 5. I'm not sure I think the 154 fights are all very losable, but winnable too, its hard to gauge, especially as Vasquez DID NOT FIGHT THE BEST IN HIS DAY (no Norris/Brown)
Fair enough, agree to disagree here. I see Vasquez roughing DLH up and stopping him late with shots to the body. And yet, he looked weaker than just about every top class welter he faced. Quartey and Tito definitely, and arguably Mosley and even Whitaker as well. It doesn't matter how much he blows up to, he'll never be as solid at 154 as Vasquez was. Vargas was shot a long time ago. I'll give you the Forrest win though. No hack beats Forrest. Mayorga is a decent fighter, but DLH beating him surprised no one but the deluded. Really? He was p4p top 8? According to who? I find it VERY hard to believe when his recent fights showed him scraping past a 38 year old Pineda, losing to Cory Spinks, and then beating Cory Spinks. Judah would have been lucky to have been within earshot of a top 20 p4p methinks. And after the Baldomir farce, he all but became a recognised joke. Credit to him for doing well against Mayweather, he did come in at his best, but Judah's best has neve been that good. Floyd wasn't doing all too much either in the first 7 rounds though. Vasquez had a bit of an excuse though: Norris didn't want to go anywhere near him. And Norris was having his hands full with the likes of Brown and Santana in any case to be that great of a guage for him. What was Oscar's excuse for not fighting the best 154 pounder of his day? (Winky Wright)
vasquez would beat the **** out of him like he did with winky, davies, castillejo or any fighter that fought him in his prime. a lot of people thinks that dlh is better than JCV because of the things that he did in the lower weights but he didnt do as much in 154 like vasquez did(9 title defenses against very good fighters like aaron davies, javier castillejo, winky wrigth).while oscar fought just 6 times at that weight(mosley, campas, vargas, mayorga, mayweather, castillejo)he lost to mosley and mayweather.for me vasquez was the better 154 fighter.
