Yes he was "visibly underperforming" as you stated, which is clearly evident on the film to anyone with an ounce of objectivity.

Just noticed that Primo got another (most likely sincere) vote this week. Missed this place.

Yes he did. One can easily see this from the little film their is of the fight.

The real conclusion, was what I stated, he was suffering from a combination of Influenza, and meningitis. He was NOT 100% as you're trying to make him out to be going into the fight. This is easily corroborated by film.

Uzcudun had not been a ranked heavyweight since 1928 so that's not true at all. The Loughran bout was certainly fixed in Carnera's favor in that Loughran was told, he had to knock Carnera out to win. Scorecards support the idea of a fix seeing as he won 5 rounds on a total of 3 cards, yet according to commentators and contemporary reports, Loughran had outboxed Carnera during the early rounds. Carnera also fouled Loughran, tackling him, spinning him out of the ropes, stomping on his feet (to the point where he broke Loughran's big toe). As for the rest of your names, I can't be bothered to see if they were all ranked or rated, as you claimed but considering the source, I doubt that.

The reports I've seen agreed Carnera deserved the decision. It's hardly uncommon for people to differ on who won rounds.

What's the source for Loughran needing the KO to win?

You'd think he'd have gone for the KO had that been the case, any evidence of that?

It seems pretty implausible, but I'm open to changing my mind if you have compelling evidence.

we need to see more film of Schaff before we can say one way or the other if he was any slower than usual. The film doesn’t particularly look like a mismatch or that Carneras opponent is fighting in a fog. Like I say, where is the comparison? Visibly underperforming compared to what?

Schaff was landing good blows throughout the film. Especially in round three. Round one he was backing primo up. Even in the last round he landed a good right hand inside. The ending looks rather sudden. A freak incident.

It's not uncommon. What is uncommon is only getting less than 2 rounds on average in the entire fight, while being acknowledged as having won the early rounds, and outboxed your opponent.

"I had to knock him out to win, I had to agree to that".

    1. Carnera wasn't exactly making it easy with all his tackles, feet stomping (which eventually broke Loughran's big toe), and trying to spin Loughran out of the ring.

    2. A KO win should not be your only chance victory, with no possible chance of garnering a decision.

So an unsourced quote presumably from Tommy Loughran is all the evidence? That and the scoring perhaps being biased to the champion, which is almost standard.

In terms of what the opinions of the reporters were. Dinty Dennis of The Miami Herald said Carnera won the 2nd, 6th and 7th and from the 8th onward the only question was if Loughran could last the distance.
Jack Bell Miami Daily News said he was on even terms or "perhaps a bit in front" until the 7th or 8th round, and tired after that, making a good effort in the 10th, but with Primo all over him in the 11th, and stated by the last 4 rounds Primo as fast or faster than Loughran

Here's a possibility that fits the evidence really well. Loughran was lying. It would hardly be the first time a fighter said stuff that wasn't true about their fights, nor would it be the only time Loughran was lying to self aggrandise. Like with his claims about his sparring with Dempsey.

Thinking about starting a gofundme to try to pay Rumsfeld to make a video on this thread. Who else is in?
