It was said to be an interview of Loughran's later in life.
What isn't common, is people who actually saw the fight, saying a fighter won the early rounds of the fight by outboxing his opponent yet the majority of the cards saying he won but a round the entire fight.
OK, if Loughran was on "even terms" or "perhaps a bit in front" this would've been reflected in the scorecards. For example, let's say Loughran was even going into the 7th. This should give him 3 rounds on every scorecard at the minimum (and that's assuming he loses every round after the 7th) Yet only one judge gave him 3 rounds, the other 2 gave him 1 a piece. That completely contradicts any notion that Loughran was even remotely competitive, despite people who saw the fight (including two people who you quoted) having it close or even having Loughran ahead going into the 7th and/or 8th. The judges' scorecards simply doesn't stand up to even mild scrutiny.

Here's another possibility. Carnera had known ties to the mix. Carnera was known to have fights fixed on his behalf so why is what Loughran said, so outrageous?

As for Loughran's accounts of sparring with Dempsey, I haven't yet researched it enough to call him a liar. It admittedly does seem farfetched though.

It's not uncommon at all for someone to get less rounds than they deserve on the official cards. This was not a close fight, you're looking at Loughran not winning 1-3 rounds on the official cards that the papers gave him.

The United Press scorecard gave Loughran 4 rounds, and Carerna 11
The Associate press gave Loughran 4 rounds, Carnera 10 and 1 even.

The Miami Daily News didn't give clear scoring, but it said Primo Carnera won the 2nd, 6th and 7th. It said Loughran made a good stand in the 11th. So with no even rounds, and giving the 11th to Loughran, he won 5 rounds. That's the most favorable interpratation of the report for Loughran.
