Is there any more that can constructively be said on the matter?

Carnera's supporters have made the case for him, I think as well as can be made.

You either accept their arguments or you don't.

I agree Carnera supporters have probably made the best possible case for him. Problem is, even the best case is still laughably poor because it's as clear as daylight who is the better all-around fighter.

If you were training a superheavyweight, who looked like he might get to Euro level, would you want him to fight like Carnera or fight like Bowe?

Which style do you think would be more likely to bring him success?

You would advise them to sacrifice their reach advantage, and fight smaller men on the inside, even if their chin was not exceptional?

Take all the time you need with this!

Agreed. It's "fun" at this point and possibly getting even better!!! One of the great Classic section threads.

    1. Bowe was dropped by two men in his entire career... and went on to beat BOTH of them. Bowe's chin is light years better than Carnera's.

    2. Nobody is saying Bowe was perfect, but he was light years better than Carnera who looked like an uncoordinated oaf.

Again, as Long Count stated, their were numerous contemporary reports that noted Schaaf was "visibly underperforming" compared to previous fights, and I'll take their opinion over yours' anyday. It's also clear as day, that something was wrong with Schaaf from the first round. https://fightfilmcollector.blogspot.com/2010/07/primo-carnera-vs-ernie-schaef-1932.html

I am not disputing this, just so you are clear what you are up against!
Yes but who was better from a technical standpoint?

Who had a better style for a super heavyweight?

Should Audley Harrison have copied Riddick Bowe, or Primo Carnera?

here are a few reports I found.

“Going into the bout with Poreda, Ernie was viewed as the underdog, but once the bell rang he controlled the fight. Like past rematches, Ernie was able to learn from the experience and knocked Poreda to the canvas four times before the referee halted the fight just seconds into the sixth round. The win reestablished Ernie as a logical contender and the upcoming fight with Carnera was exactly what young boxer wished for; a step closer to a championship shot.” - This was the previous fight that Schaff had before meeting Carnera.

Respected sports columnist John Kieran of The New York Times wrote that despite Carnera’s considerable size advantage (he was five inches taller and 50 pounds heavier) Schaaf should easily handle the Italian colossus. “There is practically no danger for Ernie in the coming engagement, provided he doesn’t allow Primo to fall on him,” he wrote.

“When he entered the ring to face Carnera, the odds makers made Schaff a 7 to 5 favorite.”

“Throughout the fight, Ernie tried to get in close to work Carnera’s body, but the approach came at price. Carnera would deliver jabs and hooks as the smaller fighter moved in, and Ernie’s punches seemed to have no effect. Buckley knew it wasn’t Ernie’s night, but he never thought he was in physical trouble.”

"It wasn’t as though he were being hit all over the ring until he was in a hopeless condition; it seemed like a one-sided fight with Schaaf holding on as any good fighter would," -manager Johnny Buckley would say later.

“In the fourth round, Ernie drew blood. He was able to unleash a left to Carnera’s nose causing him to bleed from the nostrils. In response, Carnera delivered a low blow. The two ended the round pounding each other in the clinch. As the fight progressed, the two fighters clutched more and more much to the anger of the crowd. Carnera delivered three rights to Ernie’s jaw which hurt the young fighter. Ernie’s left cheek was beginning to swell.”
