Better all round fighter Primo Carnera or Ingemar Johansson?

Idk...so much hate for the Primo. He looks so much like a modern fighter on film it’s maybe why I dislike him. Primo looks better but it’s Ingo w the better power. Ingo w the better wins. Sooooo Ingo I guess.

 

Not his strongest point, but he has a somewhat Eurocentric style.

 

I think they’ve are both underrated actually. They were both legitimately good enough to become undisputed champions in a way that very many belt holders never could have been. They both beat the best in the world at that time.

Ingo was extremely impressive in that, in very few fights, he could not possibly have demonstrated more dominance over both the number one contender and a prime world champion. But it is very few fights. Too few to make a huge case over that many champions. He’s kind of an enigma. Beat every man he fought. Only lost to one guy.

Primo really served an apprenticeship, had far more fights, legitimately beat enough contenders, won the title by a knockout and successfully defended it. Even after losing the title a detailed fight report of the Neusel fight crushes the theory that Primo was a hype job since that win came after the Louis loss.

It seems to me Primos reputation is harmed not by legitimate fight people who all endorsed Primo as a “for real” entity (this includes champions and trainers) but by the media of that time which was heavily slanted against him. They turned on him because he was non- American, a freakish giant that they could make out to be comical, overplaying his seedy management when primo was no more tied to the mob than any other champion.

 

Floyd was far more powerful than Primo and his hands were too fast, he would have destoyed Primo.

 

You don`t think European fighters can jab?

 

No way could Primo take the shot Haye shook Valuev with.

 

The European style from that period emphasizes the jab less.

I keep seeing people post over and over that Ingo was just a one handed fighter that only had a right hand. This is incorrect. Sure his right hand was his money punch but the guy was a pretty mobile fighter that was solid defensively.

Watch some on his fights on YouTube. He is a pretty enjoyable fighter to watch. I think I'm going to watch the Patterson Trilogy at some point today. I haven't watched all of those fight in awhile.
