Hearns had a damn good career, but he will always be known as number 2 to Leonard, like Frazier was to Ali... Leonard won the gold medal in 1976... Leonard knocked him out in the biggest fight of their careers, 1981... Leonard beat Hagler , but Hearns was brutally KOd by Hagler... Leonard was stopped only once in his career, his last fight, Hearns was stopped 4, or 5 times, and didnt have the legs or the chin Leonard had... I know this isn't Leonard thread /but it seems whenever the subject of Hearns comes up, Leonard"s name eventually is mentioned sooner or later.. I was never A Leonard guy, i wanted Hagler to beat the hell out of him, but that"s a story for another day..
that was the case in 1982 or 3, but now? No one thinks of Hearns as second to Leonard. People know he had a longer career and he fought something like 35 times after the first Leonard fight, Ray fought like 6 times more. Tommy won the lightheavyweight title and first man to win 4 and 5 titles in those weights. he won the lightheavyweight title 2 times and once agaisnt Hill That was the argument for Tommy about Ray in the 1980s. He mentioned it to sell the rematch in 1989, but no one really says that anymore. Since then he has his own legacy and has a deeper resume than Ray. I don't think about Leonard when I think about Hearns. I think about Barkley sometimes, but I also think about Hill and all the titles and going up in weight and all the titles, and fighting on way to long into 2006. 67 fights and almost 400 rounds.
