Fair point. But tbh, Roy's frame and choice of opponent (Ruiz) means I don't think, in hindsight at least, that Ruiz for Jones was any more dangerous a fight than Pavlik for Hopkins. Just my opinion though.
wow talk about prisoner of the moment Relax people, Hopkins did something great 2nite but RJ is a former middleweight, supermiddle weight, LHW and Heavyweight champion and not 2 mention he beat the man who won 2nite handily. Cant stand when people say Ruiz was nothing, RJ was the underdog in that fight, at the time Ruiz was a top 5 heavy, RJ took the risk going up there. Here whether you believe it or not, the risk was on both fighter, Hopkins with age, and Pavlik with weight. Hopkins is adding 2 his resume no doubt, but RJ being the most dominant fighter for over a decade, winning belts in all those divisions is better than BHOP IMO.
No disrespect to RJJ, he's a phenomenal talent. Personally, I just prefer a fighter with the discipline to stay in his best weight class, take on all comers and rule his division with an iron fist as long as he can over guys jumping around in weight looking for the right spot.
Jones can still make a statement in November, but Hopkins would have never tasted the kind of ownage that Jones has. That makes him the better man, fans aside.
Roy moving up in weight had nothing to do with discipline. he beat everyone there was to beat at middle and moved up. He was fighting and dominating a p4p beast in james toney for his first fight at a new weight while hopkins was struggling with Segundo Mercado. I've always said that hopkins run at middle was over rated. I am much more impressed with what he ha accomplished post trinidad.
Jones has the better resume, in my opinion. He has three wins better than anything Hopkins can claim -- Hopkins, Toney and Ruiz -- and also never broke a sweat for about a decade. Not only that, he beat a lot of bigger men while Hopkins feasted on smaller ones for a good deal of his MW rain. I'm not hating on Hopkins -- he's an all-time great. But in perspective, Jones accomplished something more rare. And the easy 8-4 victory over Bernard counts for something, too. Full credit to both men. It's been a joy to watch both.
Valid point. Jones did kind of seek out the 'weak link', but it's the prestige of beating a HW you know/ I think it was only done one other time, like over 100 years ago or something like that by Bob Fitzsimmons? And we were alive to see it.
I don't doubt that. But Trinidad was a major favourite going into the fight with B-Hop, and that is the truth. People say now that DLH and he were just 'blown-up'. And they'll say the same about Pavlik soon. But people also say Roy beat a weight-drained James Toney and that he handpicked his opponents. Debate is what it's all about, and in my opinion, Prime 4 Prime, Jones wins, but in terms of overall record, it's gotta' be B-Hop. He has beaten better competition, regardless of weight.
B-Hop has alot of great wins like Winky, DLH, Pavlik, Trinidad, Johnson, Joppy even Eastman was beaten alot easier by B-Hop than he was by Abraham.
Agree. Hopkins at MW doesn't compare to the LHWs Jones fought. It's Bernard as the spoiler I love so much. Trinidad, Tarver and now Pavlik.
Then you've obviously never heard of Dariusz Michaelewski (probably wrong spelling) I personally think Jones would've won, but he chose not to prove it.
