When larry Holmes faced an old Ali, he had a 35-0 record with 27 KOs.
Holmes had faced and defeated Mike Weaver, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers and Leroy Jones.

    What say you?

Mayweather is a better all around fighter. In general, I think the HWs are less well-rounded than the top fighters in lower divisions.

I think Holmes was one of the most well-rounded HWs ever though.

I think the only advantage Mayweather holds over Holmes is his defensive skills. Otherwise, in jab, foot work, ring movement, power, I have to go with Larry Holmes. In quality of opposition I have Homes ahead also. :yep

Maybe Holmes should get the vote simply based on his running two-footed jump kick off the car hood.

Mayweather is a better body puncher and more effective at different distances and angles than Holmes. Holmes had one of the best jabs ever but Mayweather does have that great jab to the body and his left hook is superior to Holmes's.

Ring movement and footwork? Mayweather almost always places his feet in the right position and was mobile as hell in his younger years. I do not see the advantage here for Holmes.

Holmes doesn't much of an edge, if at all, in opposition beaten. He was in a poor HW era and even then, missed out on a pretty decent numbers of the top HWs/WBA titlists, most likely due to issues with Don King. He also became quite a cherry-picker himself when he was chasing 49-0 and would have been crucified on boxing forums if they were around then.

However, I don't think he would disgrace the sport the way Mayweather, along with Arum and manny, has with this pathetic saga that has taken place from November 2010 til today.

Somehow I think Larry was better. Although , he like Floyd didn't fight the best competition, but that was not Larry's fault.

Holmes has a vastly superior career, but technically Floyd will be a little better because of defense and counterpunching

Larry offensively is vastly better with his 1-2

    p4p though Larry crushes Floyd

larry went life and death on too many occasions to even be considered in mayweathers class.

not even close, larry had a hell of a jab but everthing else was on average. should have compared james toney to mayweather and ask who is the bette boxer, that would have been a tough one kinda. but floyd and larry not even close, besides toney at heavy you have to go to fighters like byrd or back in the 80's tony tucker.

It's not fair to compare these 2 in boxing skills.

Holmes had very good fundamentals for a HW and probably one of the 2 or 3 best jabs in HW history (I think Ali is right up there as well,) but he didn't have the complete package like Mayweather does. He was also someone who could get hit cleanly many times throughout a fight, something that doesn't happen too often with Mayweather.

I'd say FLoyd has the advantage in footwork (obviously,) ring generalship, defense, combination and counterpunching and overall accuracy of his shots.

I've said it a bunch of times, as pure boxers go, Mayweather might be one of the 3 or 4 greatest in the history of the sport. Him coming from a family of boxers who all employed vastly different fighting styles which he learned from, boxing since he was a baby and his extensive amateur experience were all instrumental in making him the elite fighter he is today. His work ethic and training methods were also very important in his evolution as a master boxer.

He's a very complete fighter and deserving of all his accolades up to this point.

When you say better you better specify. Larry had one of the best jabs in the business but specially at HW, the kinda jab that scores, damages you and sets up the right hand to put you out of your feet for good and the Easton Assassin used that jab on his toes with excelente coordination.
Floyd is a skillful, masterful defensive boxer who counter punches super-accurately and super-fast so the power that those punches carry are magnified five-fold, steps in with whipping right hands and check left hooks always on the move, back and forward, circling, on the back foot and on the fast counter-move when his opponent who has led in is still tryin to change back to defensive mode and stance but not about yet.
Floyd is clearly more effective because despite both have dealt with power ( Witherspoon, Shavers, Baldomir, Cotto, Canelo Alvarez) no awkward, unpredictable. jerky style Michael Spinks has done the same to Money Mayweather thus far.
