2 of my favourites & 2 guys that knew boxing as well as any other, arguably the 2 best defensive boxers in history but who was the overall more skillfull boxer ?

I didnt want to influence anything, I am only interested in the opinions of the rest of classic ESBs opinions, thats why I never voted.

My vote would have gone to Pep.

    :thumbsup

Whitaker to me was a better all around boxer, Pep was a better escape artists.

PeP beat fighters with greater resumes than sweet Pea...Pep was a featherweight but a master ....different level of competition...Pea was talented but did not fight in an era so think...Pep by far the better boxer and had some power as well

So you dont think Whitaker had good power? He was pretty good at slowing people down with his body game.

What fighters did Pep beat that were better than say, Chavez, Nelson and McGirt? Obviously Saddler is an ATG, but what others?

Pep as far as i know had a reputation as a very poor hitter. I'm not sure i'd rate him above Whitaker for power actually. Whitaker popped a couple of reasonable chins.

As far as boxing ability goes I would rank Willie Pep no1 in the history of the sport.

I think Pep was a bit slicker and more fluid as a boxer, so I gave him the nod.

Though Whitaker's southpaw stance brought advantages of its own.

Those two are very close, very close. I pick Pep today but it could be Whitaker tomorrow.

OK, what 2 assholes wasted their vote on the thread starters poll option ?

You could have donated those 2 votes to the cause of Willie Pep & restored some sanity to this vote.

Those voting Pep are mostly doing so on reputation, it has to be said. There simply is no real footage of the man in his prime with which to compare, and if you're claiming the past prime footage of Pep we do have is better than the prime footage of Pea we actually have, I don't know what to say, unless you've been to a live Pep fight.

Pea did his great defensive work from the waist up, Pep the same and with his great leg work also. Pep was maybe more fun to watch, and I don't think there are films of him at his best, as with Jackie Graves. Don Riley reported that fight in St. Paul, Minnesota, and viewed Pep winning the third round without throwing a punch. Before the match it was Don who asked if Pep could do it, and Willie replied that he would see how it was going around the third. Could Pea do that?
