It's a good thing Pea never "learnt" how to quit in the middle of bouts he was winning. A trick Pep certainly never forgot.
Middle rounds????? Pep was smarter than that. When Pep was paid to lose (Perez) he got out of there early; two rounds if memory serves me right. Whitaker on the other hand was not even paid (RamirezI) when he was involved in his fix!
I wasn't talking about the bouts Pep agreed to disgrace the sport and take a fall in, I was talking about the ones where he outright quit after being ahead the majority of the bout.
It's hard to know why people even voted... I'd want to have seen 15-20 Pep fights against good opposition to feel like I could comment.
I saw Willie train at Stillman's and the 5th St. Gym, and fight live, E (not always against world-beaters) 22 times, (treasure every one of 'em) between NY, Fla. and New England.
See, John, it's because of guys like you I read internet forums. Your opinion is one of the very few worth listening to on this subject. How do you see it?
I'm, naturally, partial to Willie, E -- spent some much time with him. But it doesn't blind me to what a master Sweet Pea was. It'd be a knuckle-biter for me if they were matched. I'd be pullin' for Willie.
Yep, you always get one or two dunces in a classroom. Even tho we have close to 0 of Pep`s prime, what we do have of him shows his remarkable boxing ability even at an advanced age, the fact that his best work was missed by the camera should not be held against him as there is still enough video evidence of his mastery. Nobody denies Robinson was the greatest ever WWT for one reason mainly - we saw how good he was at MWT in his 30s, its the same for Pep. I would not have started this vote if there was close to 0 footage of Pep period, I only started it because from what Ive seen, he is right up there in pure boxing terms & then you read about his prime yrs & you can see in his style exactly what they mean much like SRR at welter. Pep was better than Whitaker :thumbsup
The only thing I remember being said about the left hook on Fulhmer was that it was the most perfect left hook ever thrown. Joe Louis says he has seen Robinson KO men going backwards & Robinson was the only one he has ever seen doing so. I believe others said it too like as you say, Bert Sugar. :thumbsup
