Kessler, Froch, Dawson, Kovalev. And that's without his career defining win over Paul Smith. In seriousness though, Canelo is good, but I think he's just much more limited than Ward, and I'm not nearly as impressed with him. I think Ward definitely had the better resume at SMW than Canelo at LMW, and didn't have a loss either. I thought GGG deserved both GGG-Canelo fights, whereas whatever you think of the first Kovalev Ward fight (which I thought Ward edged), Kovalev was a defeated man in the second.
Canelo is in pace to have a better career than ward! He is already making more money then word ever did and he is only 28
To be honest, Canelo is one of my least favourite active boxers. But I didn't say I've scored them all against Canelo, I said they could've been scored differently by other judges.
Lol foot in mouth...I don’t venture over here to general much! I respect you as a poster and have enjoyed scoring fights with you in the FOTW threads....I didn’t even look to see who posted, or I would not have even hassled you lol. Oh well I am not a Canelo fan, and don’t like the doping stuff....but I don’t really dislike him either. But then again I am one of those few boxing fans that really does not dislike any boxers at the top level, and just like boxing rather than particular boxers....although TBF I am partial and biased on some Philly fighters. I scored Canelo vs GGG a draw and Canelo the 2nd 7-5. I don’t think they were robberies but can acknowledge that they could be scored for GGG as well in fairness. I just think they were great/good close fights and get tired of all the GGG fanboys and Canelo haters...I personally like both of them and dislike both of their fan bases. I did just rescore Canelo vs Trout and Lara (posted them in classic in the what fights did you watch today sticky) and felt Canelo won them both comfortably, and don’t really see any claim for either of them, unless every close round awarded to them. I have not rescored the others but might add them to my list. Cheers
Better career in terms of recognition or historical ranking. Recognition clearly Canelo, it ain't close. Historical ranking, I'd say Canelo as well. Ward I'd say is a top 5 SMW (honestly he doesn't even rank as a top 10 LHW), but his career is largely forgettable. (I say this as a Ward fan) Canelo, his wins and even (robbery wins), he's still going to be remembered for some very large blockbuster fights against HOF'ers and ATG's
Ward's 168 resume does trump canelo's 154, you are right. Fights w/ Lara, Trout, and Angulo, were at 155. SO technically do not count towards his JrMW cv. But overall, they add towards his resume. I thought the first Ward/Kov fight was a draw. The second, yes, Ward won...unfortunately slo-mo reveals his DID go low just before the stoppage. It's a win, but tainted due to the ref dropping the ball a bit.
I just realized with this and also the Kovalev/GGG thread we need to define "career" a little more carefully. Because if success is in terms of stardom or money, Canelo is like 5 times more successful than Ward with more to come. But in terms of legacy I feel quite sure that Ward is ahead at this point in time.
By my reckoning they're roughly level pegging at the moment with ''clean"-elo being one or two signature wins away from pulling ahead. I also have a niggling suspcion that despite being retired we may not have seen the last of Ward in the ring just yet.
50-50 with 18 votes a piece. It close. If we put in all the potential losses, gift decisions and the lack of travel from both fighters into equation. Canelo does edge it ever so slightly. Ward= Boone + kov1 + hardly ever left Oakland + Balcony drug scandal + boring style < Canelo=GGGx2 + may + roided beef scandal. One thing that this clearly DOES show, is that GGG career is above both of them.
Ward wanted nothing to do with slick fighters and the only one he did fight who could be construed as slick was the emaciated shell of the shadow of Chad Dawson's weight drained shot corpse who'd been knocked out in sparring during camp by Edison Miranda and bashed up all throughout it by 12-1 novice Lionell Thompson. As hideously grotesque a subhuman ginger abomination as Clenelo is at least he fought Floyd, Trout and Lara and didn't spend half his fights octopus grabbing his opponents to death and ducking his big balloon head down between his knees and ankles to drastically reduce the number of clean punches he got hit with, especially counters, and using the top of his dome and his elbows as second, third and fourth weapons to slice up his opponent's visages and to demoralize the hell out of them. I don't recall him refusing neutral judges either, although to be fair, like Dre, he only had to navigate his way to the final bell to get the W, with the exception of once when Floyd paddled his ass all over the ring.
