Lewis had a better defense than Bowe who was hit more often but you make a good point about Lewis facing better punchers. I remember Bowe as a fit 6"5 light-heavy in the amateurs and was impressed but he was staggered by LL and stopped in the Olympics, he did however remain on his feet. Tough question and hard to answer, Bowe got hit more but recovered well. Lennox got up vs McCall but was wobbly against Rahman wobbled then and then KO'd so recovery ability may favor Bowe
Not so sure Adam .. what punchers did Bowe fight ? Herbie Hyde? Golata who never beat any top fighter at all ? Lewis fought much better punchers .. Ruddock, Morrison, Tyson, Klitschko, Rachman, Tua, Grant, Briggs, McCall, Bruno, Mercer .. it's really no contest .. the way Bowe got hit, hard and often, some of these guys might have cleaned his clock .. Newman was very , very careful about matching Bowe .. let's face it, he threw out his belt rather than face Lewis when both were in their prime in what would have sen a super fight for huge money.
Riddick Bowe was knock out cold , multiple times in the amateurs and was on the verge of being decapitated by Lewis in the Olympics and was almost iced by Evander Holyfield and pummeled by Golata .. he did not have a granite chin. That's an uninformed statement.
I'm going to say Lewis had a better chin for mid level shots, but when a bomb landed Bowe was better at recovering.
For me Bowe has clearly better chin than Lennox, though he isn't Foreman or Holyfield or Chuvalo in that departament. Bowe was knocked out by Gonzalez in ameteurs, and Lewis was knocked out by Abajian, too. Both were not stopped, but knocked out cold. Now, as a pro - Lewis never had a glass jaw (like Maskaev, Wilder, or Seldon). He took punches from Bruno, Mercer, Holyfield, Vitali among others. However, Lewis' defence is far better than Bowe's so Bowe ate many more punches in most of his fights. Holyfield dropped Bowe hard, yes, but he landed much more on his chin than he did vs Lewis. For me, if Lewis had Bowe's defence, Holyfield would've knocked him out in the rematch. Golota hits hard enough, and he landed anything and a kitchen sink on Bowe, and couldn't KO him. Can't imagine Lewis taking so many clean shots vs Golota (and Golota didn't land a single shot vs Lewis in KO1 loss). I rank Bowe's chin like 7.5, and Lennox like 6.5 on 10-point system.
This is what seperates boys from men, the ability to take a heavy hit in the face and stay on your feet.
Bowe has a slight advantage, but not by much. Rahman is a heavy hitter, but I just cant see him putting Bowe to sleep, like he did Lennox.
Gotta go with Bowe. Yes, the level of opposition favors Lewis... but Bowe is one of only 3 Lineal HW Champs who were never stopped. Tunney and Marciano are the other two. Holyfield and Golota dropped him but he was able to get up and drop them as well. Lewis was stopped twice (McCall and Rahman), one shot KOs both times. Akinwande rocked him and many feel should have gotten credit for a KD. Briggs rocked him but couldn't put him down. Mercer Holyfield, and V. Klitschko landed some good shots as well but failed to put him down.
Both had proven chins and in truth its almost impossible to say.. But considering that Lennox was stopped twice and Bowe never was, I have to lean towards Rid**** as having the slightly s****ier of the two beards. I disagree with those who say Bowe never faced a big hitter. He took huge shots from Golata, Hide, Gonzalez, Cooper and a prime Holyfield - some of whom for many rounds. There are a lot of areas where Lennox is clearly the superior of the two, but I'm inclined to thinking that durability isn't one of them.
Golota had average power a good athlete but not a big puncher, hide was not a puncher, Gonzalez sucked, cooper could wack a little and Holyfield could punch for a blown up Cruiser. What do Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Oliver McCall, Frank Bruno, tommy Morrison, Razor Ruddock have in common? Bowe fought none of them. Golota put him down multiple times and the bout should of been stopped and Holyfield had him down and out on his feet but couldn't pull trigger to finish him. Bowe was protected. Not saying Lewis had better chin but he did face better punchers.
