Ive seen many people say that Canelo is in discussion for greatest chins of all time

It made me think about someone who Canelo has fought GGG

Who has a better chin between the 2 ?

Both are very talented defensively so it is kinda hard to tell. Even when they get hit clean, both are very, very good at rolling with punching since both have great eyes and sharp reflexes. But I would lean toward GGG personally. He had quite a few fights where he would just stand in front of guys after building an early lead and would give them free shots to make for a more entertaining fight. Canelo is undoubtedly very confident in his chin (and rightfully so) but not to the point of just letting guys hit him. I've seen Canelo get wobbled by punches before. The same cannot be said for GGG.

I wondered if the last big shot Canelo took from Crawford in the 12th shook him a little bit, it seemed that way to me but I could be wrong. Either way both have great chins. GGG seems to have a better chin out of the two, he didn't even flinch when taking Canelo's best shot.

I think Golovkin has the better chin but to be honest there's not a lot in it. Canelo took a monstrous combination from GGG in their second fight that would have laid out 90% of other fighters and he was wobbled for a second, went into defensive mode and recovered right away. Golovkin took a haymaker thrown just about from behind Canelo in their first fight and he barely slowed down. Stevens and Lemieux also landed heat on GGG and they accomplished nothing.

Canelo took on much bigger punchers but both are in that uncrackable tier, whoever’s might be better isn’t significant enough to mention imo.

I call it a push but I also saw Canelo rocked badly vs Jose Cotto. Then again Canelo was a teenager in that fight, not sure if Golovkin at that age got buzzed by anyone. Certainly never saw Golovkin rocked as a pro. If I had to vote one way or the other I would pick Golovkin

GGG hasn't been hurt like Canelo has but Canelo faced way more punchers

Really good arguments for both fighters.

I'm on the fence with this one.

GGG has never been dropped or stopped in 395 fights amateur and pro combined and he fought at the very highest level as an amateur for a long time and swapped leather with tons of top amateurs - gold, silver, bronze medalists, and future pro world champions and top contenders

And if you think amateur boxing is tiddlywinks

Here he is knocking out the very hard punching future SMW world champion Bute

And you also have to factor in size. GGG was never a weight bully and was often the smaller man. Clenelo weighed more than him down at 154 and 155 many years before he fought him and would've weighed more than him in their fights too.

Don’t even go into the size aspect, GGG never even fought above middleweight.

In defence of Canelo though, the Jose Cotto was his HBO debut and he was still very young. He's given interviews where he's stated that he wasn't focused early because it was a huge occasion for him at the time, especially for a guy who was the age of a college freshman. Jose Cotto caught him in the first round as well, so he got caught cold and caught when he was unfocused with a handful of flush chin shots from a decent puncher and still managed to stay upright and even recovered within the round. It's not as big an indictment of Canelo's chin as some paint it to be is essentially what I'm saying.

Because he's the naturally smaller man, maybe?

Yes he did actually. He fought at SMW in his last fight when he was 40 y/o

But that's neither here nor there

He was often the smaller man at MW, weighing at MW what many LMWs were coming in at LMW

If you're massive or very for the weight fighting opponents who you're bigger than it's obviously different to if you're small or average sized for the weight fighting opponents bigger, much bigger or your size

Clenelo weighed more than GGG at 154 and 155 three or four years before they fought each other the first time than GGG did at 160 and would've weighed more than him in their fights

    You get what I mean.

He was average-sized at MW, often around the same size as his opponents or a bit smaller. Canelo looked like a bloated fish at 168 lbs, he was a literal midget. Munguia, Berlanga, Bivol, they all made Canelo look like a dwarf and probably hit harder than anyone GGG ever fought with.

You can argue GGG being more durable but faced-competition or size isn’t even up for debate, Canelo fought much bigger guys and his chin holding up to GGG 3x alone is more impressive than any chin performance GGG ever had, only thing that makes it debatable in GGG’s favour is the fact that he got hit a lot cleaner than Canelo usually does.

How does that have any relevance to the point?
