The shots Duran took from Hagler and Barkley, or Leonard, would have put Chavez out IMO. Roberto rolled with the punches so well that he rarely got hit flush, but as mentioned in a previous thread concerning Duran's chin, Barkley spun a 38 year old Duran around with a left hook but didn't drop him. Chavez would have been out cold after that shot.
I will give Chavez the edge. The reason being is he never got floored in his prime. The first time he got floored was against Frankie Randall in 1994, well past his prime and came at 140. Chavez was at his best at 130 and 135. When Tzsyu stopped him ,he was way, way past his prime. Duran had a very good chin, but he was floored in his prime by Esteban DeJesus twice. Tommy Hearns knocked him cold at 154.
Chavez took better care of his body...(If that is possible) There for did not balloon to the fight weight's that Duran did. (But overall I'd say they are = in chin, P4P)
This is a tough one. Minotaur and tommy the hat make a good point: Chavez never went down in his prime. Duran did twice. But then again, Cobra makes a good point -I too doubt that Chavez would have taken Barkley's hooks like Duran did. I don't know the answer.
I think Duran had a slightly better chin myself. A lot of people seem to think that Duran's chin isn't that great simply due to the fact he was layed flat by Hearns. But I'd really like to find anyone who could've taken a perfectly flush shot like that from a prime Tommy.
Well, for their prime weight classes possibly Chavez, but through the weights I'd give the edge to Duran, even though he was probably hurt more often, and KO'd badly. Chavez would not have taken those shots any better, nor would he have taken some of the shots Duran did against the MW's, as has been stated. Pretty even depending on how you're rating them. Duran was the much better defensive fighter(though Chavez can be underrated defensively) though, and at least a full level above Chavez overall.
Whitaker, possibly. Thats an area where you and Sweetpea had a difference of opinion going back a few months when Whitaker was matched with Hearns at welterweight. Sweetpea opted for a decision win for Hearns, you a knockout. Me? Probably knockout as well.
Duran has a better defense, but his chin too was excellent. I cant see chavez taking the punches of barkley and hagler, as mentioned.
I'd say too close to call. Both top notch beards. Perhaps the only that might make a difference is that sometimes Duran's punch resistance and willingness to take punishment would vary depending on his passion for a fight, whereas Chavez was generally pretty consistent until he hit the point where he was shot.
