I'd go with Toney b/c of the fact he fought heavyweights. The Sam Peter shot to the back of the head would have knocked down Hagler IMO.
Hagler stayed at 160 because he kept in shape and didn't let himself get fat, and climb into the ring looking like he was pregnant.. Hagler actually trained in the gym and not at the buffett..
Toney...no doubts about it Toney was asked once how he takes those punches...he replied "What?" :huh ****in' funny **** But both have phenomenal chins
If you take anything away from either mans chin you are insane. Tony has been taken Heavyweight punches recently and is still going old and fat and out of shape. Tony has the better chin.
I will go will James Toney as he has gone up in weight his hole career, and fighting bigger stronger fighters but he has still hasn't been KO'd. But I will say that Hagler had one of the greatest chins ever at middleweight.
As usual, many people will vote for who they think is the greater fighter and say Hagler without considering either man's chin. Personally, I think both men have what can be called "iron" or "granite" chins. On this forum I often see those terms used for people with merely good chins like Naseem Hamed and Joe Calzaghe, but both Hagler and Toney have chins of the very highest calibre IMO. If I had to say to who has the better of the two, I would vote Toney. There's not much in it and I wouldn't go to war with anyone who said Hagler's is better, but I believe Toney has the slight edge. Toney was a natural middleweight, and now he can take the shots of power-punching natural heavyweights like Sam Peter. I think that is just miraculous. Toney was dropped by Reggie Johnson at middleweight, but in the amount of fights James has had against quality opposition at his own weight and at cruiser and heavy, that's **** all really (the Jones and Peter KD's were more about balance than the impact of the punch).
Toney wins, moving from middle to heavy is huge. Taking shots from 240s guys with his small frame is insane.
Tough call. As this thread demonstrates, strong arguments can be made in favor of either guy. Both are among the best of all time, no doubt. I'd probably lean ever so slightly towards Toney if I had to make a call, because he took his punch resistance up to higher weight classes. That usually does not happen.
