On one hand you have Norton who was knocked out early in his career by Jose Luis Garcia, in his prime by ATG puncher George foreman, and later in his career by Cooney and shavers. 4 knockout losses in 49 fights.

On the other you have Buster who was knocked out early in his career by David Bey and Mike White, in his prime by Tony Tucker and evander holyfield (arguable how prime he was condition wise for that fight but it was first fight after
Tokyo) and then by Lou Savarese during an attempted comeback post-prime. 5 knockout losses in 43 fights.

Pretty similar stats, which can be misleading. Norton has a reputation on here as chinny, I don't hear the same said about Douglas. Curious what the consensus is.

Douglas quit against Holyfield. Louis Monaco also put him out with an illegal punch.

Buster Douglas it’s not close, Norton was fragile Douglas gutted it out against Tyson. The Holyfield fight was a fiasco.

not really a quit job. He was knocked out by a right hand just as he was coming in with an uppercut.

He played dead while blowing his nose on the canvas. He didn't want to get up.

The shape he came in was responsible.

There’s a difference between getting your teeth knocked out and dropped several times and being more concerned about blowing your nose than trying to stand bc you just got a record setting payday, against a guy w/o one punch power.

I very rarely agree with noneck but this seems as blatant a quit job as any. He makes no attempt whatsoever to get back on his feet despite being conscious and clearly alert of his surroundings.

Could be. I don’t think he ever really went into that fight with the mentality to win anyway. I remember the weigh in back in 1990 and how people rushed to change their bets after he stepped on the scale

It's similar to walcott vs rocky 2. The knockdown was legitimate, but the guy clearly didn't want anymore trouble and stayed down. Walcott and Douglas were mentally crushed and/or had entered the ring with a half-assed mentality from the beginning.

I think Walcott just didn’t want to go through another prolonged war. That first fight would have been taxing on anybody and Joe was 38 now after all

I don't blame him. I'd do the same thing. Why the hell am I gonna get back up to get battered around the ring for potentially 15 rounds when I already got paid? I'm going to take my old ass home to have a steak. Walcott already gave the sport of boxing his best with 110% dedication and carried his title with class before losing it in a spirited effort. He's allowed one quit job as a shopworn old fighter.
