Chins only. Neither had an iron jaw, but both had better chins than generally given credit for. But who had the better beard?
Bruno took alot more punches before getting stopped (he was rarely off his feet), from big punchers. Lewis took single shots from decent hitting guys. Why dont we ask Oliver Mccall?
Bruno had a very good chin, he lacked the survival techniques required when stung. Lewis' chin was fair, it was not as if he avoided the biggest punchers of his era. Indeed arguably the best he did not fight after Bowe was Chris Byrd, who was not exactly known as a puncher. I think Bruno had the ability to take the bigger punch, but Lewis had the better crisis management skills when hurt.
His chin wasn't as bad as is sometimes claimed and I agree he lacked the ability to survive, but that was only half his problem. The fact that he could be badly hurt in the first place was the other half. Jumbo Cummings had him in la la land and he was fortunate to be saved by the bell. Lewis survived most of the punchers he faced. Bruno was usually KO'd by them.
When you get punched by anyone who knows how to box and weighs more than 200lbs, I think you can get hurt, it is an 'occupational hazard'. And as you mentioned it, the Cummings 'moment' was classic Bruno. He just stood there in his own goofy world, and as you suggest was fortunate the bell went. Lewis on the other hand, even in the first McCall fight was trying to convince the ref he could continue, all be it poorly. I think that is the difference.
Most people confuse chin at face value....Having a good chin most of the time goes beyond how good of a punch you can take,it also depends on conditioning and mental focus sometimes.A focused prepared lewis had the better chin,if he didn't he would have been laid out by vitali and Tyson who hit him right on the chin. For the most part also I believe with Tyson the exception Bruno gassed out before getting knocked out in other fights...but lewis fought some big punchers ,he did not avoid getting hit at some point...Tyson,Tua,Morrison,Vitali...etc..are some heavy artillery.
Awful pun, but no confusion. Some consider chins in McCall, Chuvalo or Cobb context; some consider it in an Ali or to a degree Holmes context. Thus the issue is the context and normally the thread starter dictates the context. In this case though, fists of fury is exploring a potential and interesting paradox.
Ah look, here is my little stalker again.:nut Try to get ONE thing right ffs. Your answer was, Whereas mine was. Mine is definitive, as opposed to yours which is much like you. Confused.
I think that is a scientific 'standard' now; the Universe is no more. So somewhere I am not acting like a pretentious *****!
