I've heard several people on here say that Rocky had a better chin than Frazier. But I don't know if I agree with that. Frazier has only been decked by three fighters. In his second pro fight, he was suffered a flash knockdown by Mike Bruce. Later, Oscar Bonavena decked him twice. (Joe said in his autobiography that he was really hurt) and we saw what happened with George Foreman, of course. Frazier kept getting up, but George was too much.

I think Rocky would get blown out by Foreman too, but since he never met fighters with the punch and style to hurt him (like Liston or Foreman) then some say he had a chin of granted. I think Rocky had a good set of whiskers. Walcott nailed him with a hard shot. I believe the same left hook he struck Rocky with was the same punch he KO'd Ezzard Charles with.

The Archie Moore knockdown was a balance shot. Rocky was coming in with a punch of his own and got hit when his balance was off. Balance shots could happen to anybody.

Thoughts on this? Who had the better chin between these two and why do u feel so?

Gotta give the edge to Marciano for consistency. He was down less, and he got hurt less frequently.

Marciano never faced a hitter like Foreman, nor did he face somebody with the speed and sharpness of Ali, but Charles, Moore and Walcott were very skilled and crafty, and punched well in their own right. They managed to score 2 knockdowns between them against Rock, but he otherwise handled their punches very well. Foreman blew Frazier away and Ringo came very close to doing the same.

    Its a close argument though.

That's where it really ends with me. With a question mark.

Frazier certainly had a good beard. Ali punished him in the early rounds of their first fight. He hit Frazier with some thudding shots, probably harder than the bombs he hit Cleveland Williams with. You could tell Ali was trying to get Frazier out of there early. Frazier is a man for taking those shots. This one is certainly a close argument, although Rocky was down and hurt less, which Magna pointed out. But if he fought in a better era, I think he'd have been hurt a bit more often. Good thing for Rocky that Butterbean wasn't around...

It is true that Marciano never faced a puncher like Foreman but on the flip side of the coin, Walcott and Moore were much better punchers than some of the people who put Frazier down.

I therfore provisionaly give the edge to Marciano.

I certainly give Walcott the edge over Ringo, and I think Moore may have one too, due to technique and placement.

I'm gonna add this too, controversially: If Ali could make Frazier wobble, and he did multiple times, Walcott and Charles probably could too, and possibly drop him.

    I don't think that's controversial at all.

I say that because, aside from a first round knockdown in Rock's title challenge, Charles and Walcott failed to really hurt Rock. Outbox and outfox, and in a couple cases smack around a bit, yes, but he never again looked like going down till Moore put him down.

Too hard to say ... one guy fought much bigger men and punchers while blind in one eye ... the other stood up great against the guys he fought from what we do have on film ... both had terrific chins ...

I find that there's very little,or anything in it. Both men had their share of knockdowns. Many will put Rocky over joe, because of what happened to Frazier against George Foreman. On the other hand,Marciano never faced so destructive a puncher as Foreman. If we swap Joe's and Rocky's eras around, things would even out, imo.

Ali landed a lot on Norton too and Ken took the shots, Ali isn't a good watermark. I think Frazier and Rocks chins are similar, decent but dentable, Foreman would have done exactly the same thing to Marciano that he did to Frazier.

I voted for Marciano, but I'm not sure if the answer to this is fully knowable.

I think Foreman was a heavier puncher than Walcott or Moore, and more of a KO puncher mentality than Walcott. On the other hand, Walcott and Moore were, aside from being good punchers, very sneaky and crafty, and I can't necessarily assume that many of the guys who hit harder than them would have been able to find a way to Rocky's chin like Walcott and Moore did.

Marciano never got nailed by a dude like Foreman or even a capable slugger like Bonavena before... The best punchers Marciano faced were aged heavies like "Louis & Walcott" and a blown-up light-heavy in Moore...

Frazier fought the bigger, younger and harder punchers.... 'Nuff said...:deal

    MR.BILL:hat

    NOTE:

'71 Frazier mauls and brawls '53 Marciano into a TKO defeat in a time machine... IMO!!
