I always thought Hearns chin was better than people think since he had great fights where he brawled. Jones? you don't know because he never fought the greats Hearns did, but he avoided brawls.. Then when he got older his chin was exposed more. who are the great chin?

Prime? Who knows. Roy never showed a weak chin before the johnson fight. Medically, from studies on CTE, we know that if you take a 2nd concussion before you recover from the first, the damage is exponentially greater. Roy hadnt physically recovered from the tarver loss and it was obvious, he was still so shot that he lost every round to johnson even before getting knocked out. His coordination was so bad that he couldnt even move, his legs were completely gone.

Neither truly has a terrible chin. H2H, I think Jones has the better chin. Until late in his career, he showed almost no signs of a bad chin. Admittedly, he didn't get hit a ton, but, he occasionally did get hit. And, he fought MANY good punchers (Toney, Hopkins, Reggie Johnson, Virgil Hill, etc.) without ever being dropped or even wobbled. He fought more fights and more punchers than Floyd Mayweather did without being hurt. And he did it with a far more aggressive style than Floyd. Unfortunately for Roy, once he started to decline, the fall was precipitous and his punch resistance left him faster than even his reflexes did. He is not unique in this regard. It happens to lots of fighters who fight too long.

As for Tommy, I think he had a fine chin at Welterweight and Junior Middle. He could hit like a mule kick, but, his durability and legs were less sure at those higher weight if someone could avoid his onslaught and turn it into a war.

Fair points. I don't think jones chin would have been nearly as bad as many try to make out at his best.

He had quick reflexes obviously and didn't get hit much, but with 12 years at championship level before his first KO loss, ithink we would have found out much earlier if something was inherently wrong.

The way he never wobbles or just goes down like a regular chinny fighter but just goes from seemingly completely fine to completely asleep is also more an indication of damage than a bad chin. Almost all other chinny fighters also get easily dropped or wobbled, Jones lights after the back to back KOs just go completely off with no warning in frightening unnatural way.

Khan, Norris, Wlad K, David Price and most chinny fighters all got wobbled and dropped way more often than they got put to sleep.

I have to go with Hearns, I understand the argument for Jones. Hearns was only 1 punch KO'd against Barkley once. He has proven his ability in wars so I am picking him.

    Final Answer!

Hey peeps, I reckon Tommy had a bigger fighting heart than Roy and that he showed more ability to recover from being hurt ( see the Kinchen and Leonard 2 fights ) as far as battling and clinching away but I also think that Hearns had an all round worse beard than Roy did, especially prime vs prime.

I don't think Tommy would have gotten up before ten from the Del Valle or Tarver shots like Jones did.

Tommy was also way more prone to be rubberised and get the staggers prime for prime than Roy in my opinion although post the Glenn Johnson fight Roy's chin became absolutely crystalline.

    Cheers All.

It's a little hard to tell IMO.Hearns left him self vulnerable in his early career , he liked to go head to head ,so he was tagged more .That's when his chin was proved to be a little shaky .
But Jones wasn't really getting caught more until his reflexes started to go. So maybe Jones Chin was always a little soft , we just never saw it tested
I think of it this way , how would Jones have done against Leonard, Hagler , Barkley' ,would he going at those like Tommy did ,end up being KO'd as well ?
Same goes for Hearns against Tarver ,Johnson etc?

    Correct.

Jones's chin went away all at once. Hearn's in his prime had a very vulnerable chin.

Prime for prime Jones's was better.

Roy Jones Jr was like Jeff Fenech. Once he got ko he lost that aura of
invincibility and after JF was ko by Azumah Nelson he was ko by the
light hitting Calvin Groves in his next fight. RJJ in his prime he wasn't
hit much but he wasn't chinny like JF also wasn't.
Thomas Hearns was in his prime only ko by Sugar Ray Leonard and
Marvin Hagler and the Iran Barkley punch was similar type of punch
    that ko Lennox Lewis twice.

Hearns and Lennox were both "chinny."

I wouldn't call Lewis chinny by any stretch of the imagination.
