Victor Galindez gets my vote..he was an excellent counterpuncher....and edges out the others.

    Different approaches

Rose in his comfort zone was a counterpunching fencer with the left. The strongest with the counter jab especially.

galindez and Marquez with combinations.JMM pure textbook and Galindez a more unorthodox combo of cuteness, shoulder rolling right hands and viscious unpredictable looping counter-combinations.

Toney and Starling prefer the inside stuff, but both are capable of any kind of counterpunching bar the more unorthodox brawling stuff.

I'd pick Galindez as the best pure counter-puncher.

Starling and Toney could only really be effective counter punchers against certain styles. Guys who over-commited. Marquez and Galindez could pretty much set traps for anyone. Especially Marquez because he doesn't mind getting tagged. I think Marquez is the most effective counter puncher of the lot. Plus he does it with combinations with crazy variety.

Marquez aint good with movers.he falls in and overextends half the time.

even though i thought he beat John(a very average fighter imo), he looked awkward and very beatable because of the movement being given.

James Toney was even worse with movers.

The problem for Marquez is he really has very little athletic ability. In fact hardly any. That's what makes him more special, because it's purely technique, timing and precision.

His defensive reflexes are very poor that's why he looks slow sometimes and misses wide.

Toney definitely wasn't great that's true.I'd take his performances against that style over Juan's though.Him being a superior physical talent no doubt playing a part.

He did look comically inept shuffling sideways like a crab at times against Jones, but JOnes was Jones and i think had earned respect with his speed and power as much as the relatively simple lateral movement he always employed.

All these guys have a weakness or two we can pick at i suppose.Galindez often waited too long and took rounds off while setting his traps.Rose had no power, starling a lunatic that could have used his counter-jab a lot more etc..
