After the fight last night am not so sure. But I still got Sweet pea. Marquez is not Julio Cesar Chavez.

But its still a good comparison.

Whitaker was a lot more versatile & had much better defence, Mayweather lands a couple then jumps out the way, Sweetpea could stand on a dime & make you miss :bbb

Both are true ATG greats but both had a different style of defense both highly effective. I'd give the slight edge to Pea but the gap is closing and if PBF finishes his career or gets through his prime without being badly hurt or knocked down PBF might take it.

agree. i love watching whitaker work and mayweather is a little more one dimensional with his defense but he seems just as or even more effective. he got hit clean MAYBE 5 times last night

U would have to atleast wait until Mayweather retire for good to answer this one, but right now PW.

Well I can't really make a comparison since going into this fight I knew Marquez did not have the power to hurt or even make Floyd respect him so to me this topic should not be coming up again. I still say Sweet Pea as a lot of his fights he was threaten by people who had way more power than he had. Mayweather has good defense but his last 2 fights he made fighters come up 7 and 10 lbs to fight him and this is with in 2 yrs. So basically I still have to go with Sweet Pea.

Very good points. I noticed that sweet pea was knocked down occasioally Roger Mayweather, Buddy McGirt.

They have very different techniques..... pretty hard to compare them.

Whitaker used to slip and slide a lot of shots, whilst Floyd tends to block them.

this is what i'm saying. he's still the best defense i've ever seen but the dude was occasionally hit, and hurt (or at least stunned), even in his prime.

Whitaker has been tested against fighters with greater offensive capabilities. Chavez is one of the greatest combination punchers of all time and sweet pea made him look like an amateur. Therefore, you have to give the edge to Pernell. That's not taking anything away from PBF, but he just hasn't been tested against the same level of fighter that sweet pea went up against.

Yeah most of the time he was fighting bigger men, something Mayweather can't be accused of doing

Mayweather's defence involves people hitting him, but Floyd blocking it or rolling it.

Whitaker's defence involved making them completely miss.

    So I'd take Whitaker's.

(Floyd's style could lose him a fight against a puncher who throws a lot, could be mistaken for punches landing when they're not)
