Why not? If they were the same size, Spence would beat Kovalev. That's what the P4P argument is based on
Aside from the fact Kovalev was a much more skilled and better boxer than Spence (who let's not forget was able to outbox Ward on his own soil), he was also one of the top 3 most devastating punchers in the sport. His power was crazy and certainly much harder P4P than anyone Spence has ever fought. The KO% of Spence's opponents prior to facing Crawford is embarrassing. And in addition to Kov's excellent boxing skills and savage power he also had one of the best and most powerful jabs ever. Spence of course was dropped by Terry's jab. Kovalev was breaking bones with his jab and hurting and dropping opponents regularly with it and he even knocked them out cold with them too This content is protected And when Spence jabs Kovalev he gets countered with a fast perfectly timed brutal right hand over the top harder than he's ever been hit before (obviously I mean P4P) Timestamped This content is protected
Because Kovalev is clearly the better fighter ? I don't see how you can look at a prime Kovalev and not think hes better than Spence.
That doesn't even mean anything in reality Matching two guys with a large weight discrepancy changes both fighters stylistically when trying to even out sizes.
Spence is the greater fighter in terms of accomplishments imo. But in terms of their ability I'd say they're about even. Spence is a guy who doesn't really excel in most skills, but is solid at pretty much everything. he's a 6-7.5 out of 10 in everything, and maybe a 8 or 9 in body punching. Kovalev is a little less complete I'd say, but his best attributes are stronger than Spences I'd say. He's a master of the 1-2 and can win fights with just that alone. He's also solid defensively and hass good footwork. He is lacking when it comes to an inside game though, unlike Spence. I'd say he is a more natural athlete than Spence though. Faster with his hands and feet, harder punching and just in general more smooth and fluid. Durability wise, I have them about even, with maybe a slight edge going to Spence. Kovalev in general I don't remember getting hit as much as Spence does. Kova went down in that lost fight with Boone and was stopped by Ward who was really never a puncher. Spence was just stopped by Crawford but atleast Crawford has a 100% KO ratio at 147. I guess I'll give Kovalev the slight edge in overall ability. He arguably beat Ward, while on the other hand Spence was completely dominated by Crawford. Although I consider Crawford to be a better fighter than Ward, Kovalev arguably beating a top P4P guy has to count for something. I will say though that if Spence were a light heavy or Kova were a welter, I think Spence would probably best him because of his relentless body work.
From my reply to NoBoxingIQ.... "Matching two guys with a large weight discrepancy changes both fighters stylistically when trying to even out sizes."
Not really. If Crawford was a natural MW, he would basically be a meaner-less technical version of Lara. Spence would be a moreathletic GGG at 160. Loma would be Usyk at 200. Leonard would be Ali at HW.
I don't know about that. Ward only did well when he got rough. I never seen Spence get down and dirty. If it was in him to do so, he would have done it against Crawford. Point being, if Kov can get to a workhorse technician like Ward and make him get rough and dirty, he can get to Spence. Kov had a better jab, power and footwork.
Their size and how they grew will play a part in to their dynamics, their style, their attributes. Floyd @ 147 didn't move like Floyd at 130. Nor would he look like Floyd at 147 if he moved up to 175. Those examples aren't realistic. Pure fantasy, like anyP4P list.
Spence's body attack was very good and Kovalev was quite weak to the body That's what swings it for me
