The debate has led on to Gonzalez when Tsyzu beat him and Lacy when Calzaghe beat him.

At that time Gonzalez was 2-1-1 in his last 4 fights and in his 2nd fight after Tsyzu lost to a 18-10-0 fighter . Lacy was at that time riding the crest of a wave and undefeated having beaten 2 world rated fighters before facing Calzaghe and beating 2 world rated fighters in his fight after.

However you view Lacy (good/bad) at that time it wasnt as bad as losing to the 18-10-0 fighter Gonzalez lost to.

One man was the best lightweight in the world and in a short space of time faced oscar, chavez and tzyu at 140, being extremely competitive in two of those fights but getting stopped after a beating suffered by zoo.

Lacy beat reid, got twatted off joe and had a succession of gift decisions before getting battered by the most shot version of roy jones to ever win a fight.

Gonzalez my be rated better overall but (and I know you wont know this) Gonzalez was expected to be able to beat Chavez when they fought and wasnt held highly for the draw at that time.
Look at the fighters when they fought, with your weak points you cant then back Popkins up when notes Popkins age when Calzaghe beat him, as Gonzalez when Tsyzu beat him was on the way down as that loss soon after highlights

 

So both lacy and gonzalez had some abysmal performances after this fight.

But what is a better precursor? To draw with a shot chavez or to beat a shot reid? Hmmmmm tough one. And just to confirm, what relevance does this have on hopkins prime ending in 02? Absolutely fuk all.

Hopkins biggest wins after Calzaghe were hardly against stamina freaks. Jean the lungs Pascal!

Calzaghe in my opinion edged that fight but it was a massively overated performance. People make out Joe was some sort of super smart fighter when he reality his tactics early against bhop were awful(not Jones as that was a forearm, unlucky.)
