This is not "who do you rank higher p4p". Let's keep it simpler, not an accomplishments thread, not going with Wright's journey into a higher weight either. Just who is the better fighter, 140-pound Tszyu or 154-pound Wright? Who would do better against the greats of their division from other eras? Who was more complete? ...Etc. Two damn fine fighters, solid champs. This content is protected This content is protected [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCPerTCaSYs[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdSAgMAeHik[/ame]
Without question, the 154-pound Wright was clearly the more complete, more effective, and all-round better fighter. Of course there are aspects of Tszyu's game that were significantly better, but all in all Wright by a distance. The Winky of the 1st Mosley fight is one of the best lightmiddles ever h2h I think, he'd cause some shocks.
Early Tszyu was the more complete fighter in my estimation. He gradually fell off technically as his career progressed, becoming as reliant on that right hand as Pacquiao used to be with the left. Still a very effective, if basic in approach, straight puncher. Winky was always too basic (albeit very effective as well) for my liking.
Kosta could have easily surpassed Wright if a few matches came off in the 90's. Sadly he never got those breaks. It's funny when you think about it, Tszyu actually had less opportunities to shine then Wright did. Wright actually had that door swung open by Mosley... Hoya and Mayweather never accommodated Kosta. A Mosley/Kosta fight could have been done as well actually.
hey all, just a rookie in the eastside forum. im loving the wealth of knowledge here though. I feel Kostya Tszu was the better overall fighter. Many more offensive weapons in his repotoire. Much better punching technique. I loved how he would set people up for that straight right. Had some slick movement when he needed it and was a thinker in the ring. Winky has one of the best guard defences i've ever seen. He's tough, and his size gives opponenets a lot of difficulty. But for someone who relies on one punch, the jab, i never felt that his jab was especially thrown that well. It was thrown a lot, and he's very good at timing his opponents with his jab, but it wasn't a head snapper. And I never liked his left hand punches particularly. Overall I go with Kostya Tszu.
I've always wondered how effective some of these fighters would be, like Wright, had they had to wear MMA size gloves. Their defense tends to rely on the thickness of those gloves. Tszyu was the more talented fighter coming out of the amateurs but I feel he never quite lived up to his ability long-term for one reason or another.
Winky. I don't feel by a longshot though, but nor do I see myself changing my mind, so I voted for both Wright options. :tong
Winky certainly proved himself against a greater variety of world class talent. Hopkin's, Vargas, Taylor, Mosley 2x, Quartey. Kosta was just unlucky to never be able to get those mega matches where he could of shone. It also helps that Wright has/had close to 60 fights to show his skills/talent off, where as Kosta had far fewer at 34.
He may have had fewer fights, but he sure was fighting a ton of tough hombres early in his career. And he was even more of a road warrior than Wright was and almost every match he ever had, he never had the benefit of home cooking. And Tszyu was one of the best of all the elbow out guys.
I voted Tszyu. Wright was hot and cold at times. Great dominant wins against Tito when Tito was older.
i voted for wright but i dident read the thread correctly and i was thinking about accomplishments. i think tszyu was more well rounded in talent because he needed to really on his punch and his chin to win fights due to getting hit much more then winky. i think winky would do better against more all time great however, because his style is hard to judge in a fight (did the punch land on winkys glove? it partially landed... do i count that punch?). when combined with winkys great jab and busy style, it was very hard for any fighter win rounds against right. you would have to out hustle a very busy fighter and land shot on a fighters whose arms (when up) covered his waste to his cheek bone.
