I much prefer Robinson's execution. Leonard was an excellent perimeter mover, but it was more detached from his offensive capabilities than Robinson's ring-perimeter mobility was.Robinson could punch and fight on the back-foot or slow retreat superbly and change direction onto the front foot seamlessly. Leonard tended to square up and sacrifice offensive output when moving laterally and we never really saw him fight a slow backfoot fight. He could still come down off his toes, change direction and go into offensive mode quickly, but it was a more rigid blend of stick and move than Robinson, who could punch from any position.leonard needed to come down and plant his feet before he could punch. It was effective, yet not as effortless or likely to be as successful against a wide variety of styles as Robinson's more educated lateral\backfoot stylings. Both were very effective fencing and turning their opposition at ring-centre and on the frontfoot.
Ive found most of Leonard's 'Ali' foot movement was all unnecessary and often more for show than for any actual effectiveness. And its not very Ali lke anyway, its just Loenard moving, Ali was much more offensivly capable with it Lora has nailed this topic though
Leonard's footwork was superb. Though Hagler's non existent footwork by the time they fought didn't make matters easier for Hagler either.
Leonard relied on his much more then Robinson did. But it doesn't mean it was better. They both had GREAT footwork. But used it in different ways. Leonard more as part of his defence and Robinson more as setting up his offense and vicious combinations. They could create space and control distance with their feet. But i think Robinson had slightly better positioning with it. I say that because i've seen Robinson use his feet more for timing. Whats called timed footwork. I think Leonard's footwork had a little more wasted motion in it. That's just comparing with Robinsons though. Leonard's feet are among the best in history, but Robinson for me is hard to compete with in this area. As far as limited wasted motion and position and timed footwork is concerned. Both impeccable on their feet, but Robinson edges for me.
