Schmeling was P4P better. But Sharkey had a few lbs on him. Haven't really sat down to analyse this one.
Schmeling would do better against a 200lb field. He's more consistent. Sharkey might be better on his best day, but fighting is done in the real world - it's why Holyfield is better head to head than Bowe, yeah?
They were very close head to head at their brilliant bests, the difference is that Schmeling was consistent while Sharkey was not. I am currently planning a thread challenging the notion that Sharkey was inconsistent, but what do I know? Two factors to consider are that Schmeling was much more mentally stable, but he was also in difficult fights much less frequently.
Sharkey ... keep in mind the version that fought Schmeling both times was not the best Sharkey ... he ended by 1928 ..
