Indeed, i was unimpressed with Tyson's sloppy defense against Bruno back in '89, he walked through many clean heavy punches that he had no business being hit with.

If you can get through listening to Rooney, you can see just how elusive Tyson could be with subtle movements coming forward in this clip.

I had issues with Tyson's defense from a mechanical stand point, he squared his feet up when he used that window wiper defense, which is obviously dangerous as you can be caught square, or! when in transition, say you move your head left, sooner or later your head is going to have to move back on to the line, which is where you can be caught in mid transition, also, you cant pivot away after slipping the right hand cause your body is not side on enough to give you that pivot, which means you can also be caught with the left hook when coming back up. Tyson used his defense to set up offense imo, to counter, he did not have a particularly great defense imo, infact Im pretty sure that would of become very apparent had he fought a Bowe, Lewis, Holy at that point.

Little experiment here, at 0.07/0.08, look at Mike Tyson's body shape, his weight is all on the left side, his feet are square, so as you can see, you can imagine from looking at that position right there, he cant pivot away to the left, and if the guy who threw the shot, is coming back with the left hook, he is going to be open to that punch, only reason Rudduck does not land it the way he should, is cause he pulls out a bit after throwing it and throws it from mid range, when he should of turned it over from inside after the right hand missed.

Tyson mainly used the tick tock motion on the outside. It was what he did as he came forward which was the biggest part of his defense. You can see what Im talking about in that Spinks clip. Keep in mind Tyson was coming forward a lot faster than Qawi was, so he had to be less jerky to set for his counters.
He did often come forward dipping to his left looking to setup his lefthook.

True... But Tyson looked like a master when he waxed Carl "The Lie" Williams in July of '89 on HBO. Notice that Tyson tags and drops Williams with a wicked left-hook, but also headbutts Carl while he's sinking to the canvas... It was beautiful....
