Better infighter - Dempsey or Bowe?

Dempsey. Love watching his in fighting in the Brennan, Gibbons, Sharkey and Carpentier fight. Lot of spoiler moves, mixed with brutal short punching and leveraging his opponent.

 

Bowe got good angles and leverage inside but had no defense, a lot because he'd open up and sell out to get that leverage. Jack was much more efficient and linear, no excess flaring, at least when he was focused.

 

Riddick Bowe would have far too much for Jack Dempsey.

 

If Dempsey fought sharp shooters like Tubbs , rapid fire guys like Hide and fast counter strikers like Holyfield, you would see he had no defence either.
Don't ever recall Bowe being one shotted out of the ring.
I do recall a legendary uppercut that corpses Dempsey upon connecting.

 

Probably Dempsey. Although Dino does have a point that Bowe's competition is significantly better and that affects how a fighter is perceived.

 

I'm not doing head to head. I'm going on the footage of their actual fights. I don't recall Dempsey's career being ended by a basic ***** arm puncher with no twitch.

 

The footage is against Yokels. Willard in the modern era is Mariuz Wach.

Where was the chop-down ability against Tunney? Jack was led around the ring like a puppy , winning about 3 rounds in two fights.

Larry Donald who would box and move well off the backfoot - couldn't keep Bowe off him. Lost every round. 12-0 shootout for Bowe.

What about Hide? Running a marathon backwards. Got systemically chopped down and stopped.

Jack swings looping haymakers at big stiff plodders who couldn't box a lick in close.

He was more of a mid-range guy anyway. Show me the tape of this guy standing in the pocket and out manoeuvring , out finessing , outworking guys with short shot variety. ?

His style was leaping in with swings literally thrown from his ass. Yeah , he could clump big stiff idiots as they stood up , and had decent ability on the inside - but a masterful inside craftsman like Bowe he was certainly not.

Your post was not about infighting at all. It was a run-of-the-mill Dempsey diatribe. There are plenty of threads for that. Hell, I've posted many of the same things. But if you were going to ask me which guy should be watched and emulated for his technique inside, I would say Dempsey. Bowe was a big, strong guy with a stout beard and an offense that often ended fights early. Ever wonder why a guy like that completely broke apart before 30? Perhaps because he often to chose to fight the wrong fight, at the wrong place, with a high risk technique.

 

Reqd it again , or for the first time.
Dempsey was a mid ranger.
His own admission was to step in to every throw.
We obviously know that now, Technique was still developing back then.

 

Bowe was a nightmare in his short prime. He had an inside game like no other big man before or since for me. An even shorter prime than Tyson but some kind of monster for sure.

Yeah offensively he was as good as it’s gets for a 6’5 heavie fighting on the inside but defensively it was a good job he had a good chin as he didn’t seem to mind taking shots as long as he could land his as well. In fact I think it was the accumulation of shots that he took an the ballooning up in weight an bad living that cause him to have such a short prime.
