Joe Louis was definitely not the best heavyweight infighter I have ever seen, he was certainly better than Lennox Lewis on the inside...in my opinion.

9-0 on the poll says it all. I agree.

Start watching around 5:10 or so, and especially watch the combo that puts an end to this affair....

Lets not confuse style tendency with technique and results. I am a tad disappointed people are saying so and so was better...without saying why.

I think Lennox Lewis was the better inside fighter, and the smarter one. Joe Louis sometimes forgot to use his uppercut, and could not clinch nearly as well as Lennox Lewis could. Joe Louis had trouble with fighters crodwing him, crouching, and mauling him....this is where a good inside game makes a difference. Lewis would bang his guy with an uppercut and was hardly ever mauled or crowded. Lennox Lewis was a super heavy...he didn't need to fight inside often, but he sure a heck could.

The power in Lennox Lewis' uppercut was a real game changer.

That was against Phil Jackson. Now watch Lewis against Mercer who wasnt the greatest infighter himself, yet he still outfought Lewis on the inside.
Lewis could fight a little on the inside he was a great fighter, but against the better opponents, you saw more grabbing and tieing up on the inside as opposed to punching like in this fight against a minor threat in Phil Jackson.

I am not saying Lewis was the better infighter. I just love that finishing KO. And Phil Jackson is no worse than half of Louis' title challengers.

Part of the reason Lewis was such a great fighter was that, at his best, he absolutely controlled distance. Someone above mentioned how he never let Tyson get off shots in close, which supposedly proved that Lewis could not fight on the inside. Do some of you even watch boxing? That was the dumbest ****ing comment I've read in a couple weeks. I suppose a great strategy for a physically powerful 6-5 fighter would be to fight a 5-10 whirlwind dynamo on the inside. Yeah. I don't think I'll waste much more time reading comments like that.

Thats right, and why he became great instead of maybe not, had he continued on like he was going.
He didnt really need to fight inside once he learned to keep it on the outside and shut it down on the inside.

In case you didn't read the thread starter's post, it was her friend who claimed that Lewis fought on the inside against Tyson, which is ridiculous, and people here simply proved it wrong. Not that anyone thinks Lewis should have fought on the inside against Tyson.
