This must mean Hagler is way better than Mayweather then, because Pac is gonna beat the F UCK outta Mayweather.
Hagler Pac basically jumps in with a 1-2-1 combo over and over again with the occasional right hook thrown in for good measure. He's been able to make it work due to his hand/foot speed and the angles at which he throws those shots. However, as far as boxing ability, depth, and overall skill level goes, Hagler takes it easy.
It's hard to disagree with you of course. Both are great and had different styles. I was considering Hagler only from the southpaw stance. Manny's left appears stronger and quicker, P4P, and his right hook is outstanding, He also handles all styles well. Hagler of course could be outboxed, by Ray for example, or by Duran for parts of their fight. But they're ATGs also!
Haggler was a switch hitter though, he'd often change stances. Manny's a great fighter, but Hagler's better.
I love Hagler but enough with the nostalgia, Pac is clearly better. 8 divisions vs 1. Hagler fought guys coming up in weight, 2-4 weight divisions above their best, meanwhile Pac is fighting probably 4 divisions north of his best. Bert Sugar long ago said was the best southpaw of all time, and can't argue with that. You can critisize Pac's chin but lets see how Haglers chin holds up at HW, because if we make a comparison, Pac's chin was pretty damm solid at his prime weight where he wasnt drained or underweight, FW. On top of that he has better footwork, better speed, better power p4p. Pac on his prime weight would have never struggled with the likes of Autofermo or Duran, as great as he was, he was a mediocre MW and a great LW. That would be like Pac fighting a great flyweight coming up to FW. People very quickly forget what Pac has done. He has more champions on his resume, champion for many more years, higher on P4P rankings and for longer, won more belts, won more lineal titles, won more championship full stop. On every stat he beats Hagler.
You seem to be confused between "greater" and "better." We're not comparing resumes, we're comparing skill sets as a southpaw. I see your point you are trying to make, but I fail to see how any of that makes Pacquiao "the better boxer." Footwork, cutting of the ring, a jab, ring generalship, defense, etc.... You know "boxing skills." And this comment reeks of fanboyism: "Pac on his prime weight would have never struggled with the likes of Autofermo or Duran" Duran would have a field day with Pac. Just be real for a moment please. Duran would beat Pac at ANY weight Duran competed in. Straight up.
How you do it is irrelevant. The 1-2-1 combo was effective enough to stop Barrera, beat Marquez and take a prime Morales to 115-113. And then he went up to 145 and beat Cotto at a weight he has no business in.
People have seen Pacquiao's recent fights the past 5 years where he was old and blown up and that's imprinted in their memories. They forget. At 122-130 he was a bad, bad man.
Duran would be the bigger man. He's still a full weight division bigger than Pacquiao. So I'd give him the edge in a fight based just on that alone. Pacquiao is an extremely small fighter. But at equal weights I think Pacquiao could physically overwhelm Duran. The same way Leonard did in the 2nd fight. He was outclassed athletically and all of his technican skills couldn't help him.
This is an ESB interview with Manny Steward. Scroll down to the part where Steward favors Pacquiao to beat Duran at lightweight and at welterweight. http://www.boxing247.com/weblog/news.php?p=27333&more=1
