Bernard Hopkins actively made this unification of the titles happen. His legacy will be that of a true warrior. If this will be his last fight, he will go down as the man who really tried to make boxing closer to having that ONE Title per division, instead of this corruption that rules the sport today. I never really liked him as a fighter. But he surely deserves all my respect.
Pretty simple Mayweather is the guy people love to hate, it doesn't matter who you compare him with. you can ask who's better Mayweather or Russell jr and GR jr would come out on top.
Mayweather has the better resume. Legacy is how people think of them, similar to Larry Holmes having a bad legacy because most people don't like him despite those same folks admitting his greatness, I suspect Hopkins will be looked back on with smiles and "oh my!" while Floyd, perhaps the most passionately hated boxer ever, will be passionately hated by some for a long time.
Hopkins fought anyone and everyone, he just got into the ring with a dude that killed a man, Floyd won't even get in the ring with post-Marquez Pacquiao.
Even though Mayweather has the better resume, It's Hopkins who has the better opposition and more riskier fights than Mayweather. I think 10-15 years from now.... Mayweather will be known to be the undefeated champion who had lots of excuses and demands and the boxer who never fought Pacquiao. Mayweather may have fought these ''champions'' but stylistically they were tailor made for him, flat footed or slower fighters, Maidana 2x, Guerrero, drained plodder in Alvarez etc. Last time I checked it was back in 2006 in Judah (Southpaw) that Mayweather last fought who had speed, good foot work with decent power. Probably in Mayweather's mind, Pacquiao is the best Southpaw and has the chance to defeat Mayweather but of course they will deny that.
Floyd's career will be forever associated with his duck of Pac, even if he fights him at this point. And Bernard has the superior resume if we look at the names and ignore the results. And I find Bernard to be more of a man (in the words of Duran) than Floyd, more worthy of respect. However, when I assess greatness, I rank skill (as I observe it) in the mix as well as resume. In addition, Floyd won all of his fights (save maybe Castillo 1). Therefore, I would have to rank Floyd higher at this point. However much that pisses me off.
Floyd does have incredible God Given boxing talents no one is denying that. BUT talent alone does not make a great boxer. He also need heart , courage & quite literally BALLS !! These are the attributes Floyd lacks. He refuses to fight his legitimate contenders while making the ones he does face fight against the odds. Floyd makes sure his homies in Vegas will officiate well in his favour. He can make any stipulations he wants, he injects steroids Xylocaine in his hands for every fight, Basically its very difficult to lose for Floyd. Tho he has been beaten twice by Castillo & Maidana 1 but received gift dec wins. Kenny Bayless was brought in for the Maidana rematch as Floyd objected to the way Tony Weekes called the fight fair & straight down the middle. Floyd aint used to that
If we all start getting obsessed with that 0 we will actively encourage a era of cherry picking. A 0 means absolutely nothing if you are not willing to fight the best. How many people in the top 10 ATG had a 0 at the end of their career? And even now when people bring up Hopkins vs Mayweather the best the Mayweather fans can do is state that Mayweather made way more money than Hopkins .... like that is even relevant in any way. I swear its like they get a piece of the money themselves. Hopkins fought literally everybody, even people who were stylistically completely wrong for him and even then wanted rematches. Yes he took some losses but he also has a ton of quality wins. For me its clearly Hopkins and its not close. If Floyd had 25% of the balls Hopkins had he could have been in the running for the Goat debate... but instead we get a legacy littered with what ifs.
