I'd put them about even at this point, or close to it. Certainly neither one is head and shoulders obove the other as far as legacy goes.
I would have to pick Hopkins, although if you ask me who was better when both guys were peak and at thier best, I would pick Jones. But careerwise, Hopkins fought and beat the better guys.
Id say Hopkins because although he never won a heavy or super middle belt,he never got knocked out and has won in fights where he was the underdog.I think a lot is made of Roy winning at heavyweight and even though it was a great achievement he was in with one of the weaker heavy weight champs, its not as though he beat Lewis who was the domminant heavy of the time.Roy has a great legacy but i think Hopkins has been more consistant over the years.
If we look at the actual quality of fighters, let's say Roy/BHop vs. The Ring P4P-ers at the time, the difference is huge. And what offers more quality in the resume, title/division wins, or performances vs. actual top elite oppositon? P4P-ers they faced: Roy Jones: -James Toney, ranked in 5, win, almost shutout decision -Joe Calzaghe, ranked in 5, loss, almost shutout decision Bernard Hopkins: -Felix Trinidad, ranked in 5, win, shut-out in 11 rounds then knockout -Oscar De La Hoya, ranked in 10, win, one-punch knockout -Jermain Taylor, ranked in 10 in the 2nd fight, loss, very close, debated -Antonio Tarver, ranked in 10, win, almost shutout decision -Winky Wright, ranked in 5, win, close but clear decision -Joe Calzaghe, ranked in 5, loss, very close, debated -Kelly Pavlik, ranked in 5, win, shutout decision In the last 5 fights vs. P4P-ers, Hopkins was 40+. Performance vs. same opposition: -Jones-Hopkins obviously, Roy W12, clear decision at a very eary stage of their career -Glen Johnson: WKO9 Jones, LTKO11 Hopkins -Antonio Tarver: L12 Jones (close/debated), WKO2, W12 (clear). L12 Hopkins (close to shutout) -Felix Trinidad: L12 Jones, LTKO12 Hopkins -Joe Calzaghe: W12 Jones (almost shutout), WSD Hopkins (close, debated)
RJJ because he is a better fighter by a long way , he was probably the best fighter in the 90's. Bhop is an expert at destroying his opponents game plan and turning the fight into his fight and taking home the victory. but bhop gets bonus points for being hilarious
To me this is difficult to answer depending on how the question is worded. I think as an overall legacy history will see Hopkins more favorably because of how long he was able to compete at a world class level. However on the otherhand prime for prime I don't think anyone would say that Hopkins was a better fighter than Jones.
