Both 2 weight champions and both fought the best. Both were massive, though Ricky did it on Sky & PPV whereas Nigel was a product of ITV mass audiences.
Benn was simaler to Hatton in style, but was outboxed by Watson and Eubank, lost to Malinga and Collins, never fought the likes of Toney and Jones Jr. And I love Benn. He was a truly exciting fighter, but could be outsmarted. Let his heart rule his head, much like Hatton. I think Hatton squeaks it, but I'd rather watch Benn fight.
Time is needed for Ricky to heal a few wounds. If the Paciquao fight is Ricky's last, he goes out on almost a big bummer as Benn. Remember Benn quit like a dog in his last two fights, and his honest hard working opponent (Collins), while solid, will I suspect, not going down in history on par with Manny. Benn also heard the boos in his final bouts, from some of his loyal fancy. Time will tell, but I suspect Benn and Hatton will go down virtually in the same place in British boxing. Both were working class fighters, who were aggressive and fun to watch, but whom seem destined to fall just short of absolute top notch. Who you rate above whom will I suspect depend somewhat on where you come from (The North or South) and the era you feel most connected with. I am from South London and was most interested in boxing in the 80s and early 90s, thus I say.......... Hatton:hey, just.
I think McClellan is. Both were p4p fighters, but there are no mitigating factors with McClellan, whilst many say Tsyzu was past his best and was fairly inactive at the point when he fought Hatton. Both fantastic wins for british boxing though.
Agreed McClellan was coming off good wins inc. those against Julian Jackson.Benn looked gone in the first aswell.A case can certainly be made for the Tsyzu win though and both huge for British boxing as you say
There were according to some reports about McClellan in training beforehand - if they are to be believed. Also McClellan was moving up in weight for the first time. A great win though no doubt.
I am a big Hatton fan, but for me Benn mixed in a tougher era and with much better company.. Benn gets it for me..:happy
Agreed. There were mitigating factors in the McCellan fight. I think because of the passage of time the legend of Benn and the tragic outcome they are somewhat ignored. The same I think is true of Hatton although his win against Tyszu is underrated. Let's not foget both Hatton and Benn had the crowd on their side. McCellan was coming off good wins as was Tyszu. However there were no questions about Kostyas training camp or any weight issues. In fact as I recall Tyszu looked a beast in training. I think history will judge Hatton more kindly than a lot of people do at the moment. But both Benn and Ricky will be in the hall of fame, and likely divide opinion for decades. Hattons losses are against the very best but an arguement will be made by historians that he didn't fight all his domestic rivals. It's a tough one. Right now Benn for me the way he reinvented himself after the Watson fight gives him the edge. But let's see what Ricky does next.
