I don't consider this very good quality. It's dark, but more importantly it's too fast. I have seen versions slowed to a normal speed somewhere so I know they exist. Of all the defects in film, speed bothers me most. You can hardly tell anything about fighters when the speed is not correct, IMO. No reflection on you, BitPlayer.
You can slow it down on the YouTube player. There's better speed footage on YouTube, but it's badly VHSed, more of it though.
The footage aint bad, its just how old time boxers fought. They moved in a lower frame rate. Look at how they get hurt when a punch hits them in the head. Amateurs.
Its all relative. But I agree that speed effects the viewing performance the most. And often its not a matter of just slowing down the footage. The frame rate changes throughout the footage. Which makes it hard to connect with what you see.
This channel also has the only watchable version of Dempsey vs Firpo, which i thought was an overrated fight until i saw the cleaned up version
I understand, I've worked with 16mm, etc. film for a long time. Not much digital, though. I have too many interests, and the time I have left is too short to get into that at this stage. I am very thankful for guys like yourself.
I think that one (and few others they've uploaded), are from this documentary, though obviously a very good quality version. This content is protected It's a fun watch.
They definitely have the very high quality version of Tony Canzoneri vs Kid Chocolate, yet they only released the last round. Wish they'd release the whole bout. In that quality it would be a god send for me.
The first footage of the second Charley Burley vs. Oakland Billy Smith bout that I saw was absolutely terrible in quality. It must have been very difficult to get decent footage of the bout while working with the original film. - Chuck Johnston
