I was at both of the Holmes/Spinks fights. One of them I though he definitely won, the other he may indeed have lost by a small margin. But he was at the very end of his career, and Spinks was a small, and very quick fighter, and the worst possible match-up for an aging Holmes. Overall, Ruiz isn't even in the same league as Holmes. Most here will no doubt disagree, but I am very sure that an absolute prime Holmes beats a prime Ali, who in my opinion is somewhat over-rated as a result of his great personality. Holmes is the DEFINITION of an all time great!
How on Earth anyone could vote for Ruiz is beyond comprehension!! I've nothing against "The Quiet Man" but please, just consider this for a minute! And yes, I am overlooking the blatantly obvious fact that Larry Holmes is a top 5 (In most people's opinions) ATG and Ruiz is not even a hof!! I'm talking resume-vs-resume, like the man requested!!
But he was forced to defend against some shitty competition at times, Scott Ledoux and Tex Cobb for example.
Haye fans are trying to build up the rep of this no-talent slug so when their man starches him, they can crow about what a "significant" victory it is.:yep
I'm a Haye fan and realise a win over Ruiz wouldn't mean ****. FFS - these gay threads ruin the general forum.
:good Larry is #2 on my own all-time list, second only to "60's" Ali. And how anyone could disagree that Larry had the better resume is beyond me. Shaversx2, Norton, Witherspoon, Smith, Cooney, Weaver, Williams, '92 version of Mercer, going the distance with "Prime" Holyfield, and as you rightly point out losing two extremely close decisions to "Prime" Michael Spinks not to mention the many other defences he made of his title. AND HE BEAT BUTTERBEAN!! Surely that seals the deal. Seroiusly, Ruiz will always be remembered by me for "Cheating" twice! Once in his second fight with "Well past prime" Holyfield and once against Kirk Johnson. He beat Hasim Rahman but he lost to a guy who was giving him over 2 stone (RJJ) and to Valuev, amongst others!! So, in essence, his "Finest hours" are his victory over an aged Rahman, and a win and a draw against "Ancient" Holyfield, who also beat him!! oh **** I forgot, he also beat a middle aged Tony Tucker, I guess that makes it close then!!. I'm not hating on John, far from it, i'm just pointing out the facts! Seriously guys this is, as my American cousins would say, a "No brainer"!!!
:good You may be on to something!! I'm more concerned with the guys who voted for Ruiz!!! If they were Brits my message to them is this: For ****s sake man, don't you read these posts? Our American cousins already think we Brits are all intellectual pygmies, please do not "Add fuel to the flames"..
