Although Leonard has the bigger and better wins on his resume, the depth of Robinson's is so overwhelming in comparison to Leonard's that he clearly takes this Robinson's depth in his resume is almost unmatchable, that only a very select few have matched or slightly surpassed it.
honestly, leonard fought some of the best fighters of all time, but so did robinson, in much greater numbers. robinson has the better resume.
Not really out on a limb IMO. Hagler, Hearns and Duran are better than most, with Gavilan and Armstrong strongly comparable. I suppose LaMotta if you consider him a Top 10 Middleweight.
On this forum mate, picking against Robinson at anything is out on a limb. :verysad You may of noticed, I pick against him quite alot. Wilfred Benitez is also an excellent win for SRL.
Well, I happen to consider Robinson the GOAT and I don't find it outrageous in the slightest. That means You certainly shouldn't. Start asking these guys to break down all of the fighters being mentioned that have obvious poor form or that there's no film of. For me, it's just a matter of Robinson defeating so, so many of the rated fighters between 147-160 of his own time that it's hard to deny his placing. Some of them WERE obviously great. Leonard's very top wins (what define his legacy, really) are surely comparable, however.
Leonard is the only top 10 ATG who is in there with so few fights. That says alot. I think if we take the top 4-5 wins for each, then Ray Leonard comes out on top. I think that the number of fights, and contenders fought by Robinson gives his supporters a solid argument. As a side note, Ray Robinson AND Ray Leonard, would have nightmares with a peak James Toney :smoke
leonard no doubt comes out on top when it comes to his top four or five wins, and anyone who's familiar with both fighters know that, but where I disagree with you comes in your following point. the number of fights and contenders who robinson fought give his supporters, leonard fans, and impartial pundits, an overwhelming argument.
Fair enough. I wouldn't disagree with that second part either, and I'm sure you'd cite rehydration as well.
Highly debateable: SRL: KO15 Benitez KO8 Duran KO14 Hearns W12 Hagler KO9 Kalule SRR: W10 Lamotta W15 Gavilan KO5 Fullmer W10 Angott KO2 Olson There's more star power at the top of Leonard's resume, but when you consider the context of the wins there isn't much between them. Robinson gave up 15lbs in beating a prime LaMotta, destroyed Fullmer when well past his best, and beat a prime Angott when Robinson was still a relative novice.
